So I posted this on a rabbit color group, no answer yet.

I bred my AmChin [Mroz] to a Cali in hopes of another very light Chin color kit [Jasna]. Doesn't look like she had any this time around. =(
She does have 5 possible agouti and two pinks/whites.
The whites would be REW, no?
I know AmChin crossed with Silver Fox gets Agouti, does AmChin crossed with Californian get the same or X tipped steels?? X being Gold/Silver/Black.

Also, adding the picture of Jasna I got from breeding the AmChin with a Cali. I just LOVE the color on her! None of these kits look to be the right color for day olds. I still have her day old pic, and they don't match. =/ Guess I'll be trying again in the fall for another just like her.

Y'all's thoughts?

Regular chinchilla kits look like chestnut when they are newborns and if they're steel their bellies will not be pink but slightly darker.. In a few days the fur on the back of their necks will be yellowish brown if chestnut or gold tipped steel and greyish if chinchilla or silver tipped steel.

The white kits are more likely Himalayan/California marked than REW since the buck js this colour which is dominant to REW but recessive to chinchilla.

So steels are dark bellied, agouti are light bellied....I should of remembered dark bellies is steel...Maybe I need to eat some mind glue so things stick better, lol.

Thanks, Dood!!

__________ Fri Jun 28, 2013 10:48 am __________

Oh, duh. Here's the pic. =D
I saw the light inner ears and bellies and none were very light, so no Jasna colored I'm guessing. I thought 'ugh Agouti again' but then had a brain fart about what steels would look like. Wait, what breed could you cross with the chin to get steels? Or is there none? I'm thinking either way I can't get steels, since I only have the SF and Cali to cross the Chins with.

Haha, I had a dream last night that I went to check on these kits and the agouti ones were brokens. Like all the dark was broken, but very close together with the white bellies.

The Cali buck could be any colour under his white coat.

Steel only modifies agouti rabbits and hides in selfs. It turns chestnuts into gold tipped steel and chinchilla into silver tipped steel. You can also get chocolate tipped steel, opal (blue agouti) tipped steel, lynx (lilac agouti) tipped steel, squirrel (blue chinchilla) steel and so on.

Those kits do look pretty dark and may be gold or silver tipped steels.

And if Mroz and the buck carry self they could just be blacks.

Hummmmm

I recently got a surprise light grey chinchilla kit. After your post i decided to go over my records and the mother has had one self chocolate kit and two chocolate agouti kits in the past. This leads me to believe the kit 'might' be a chocolate chinchilla. This kit has very unique eyes, they are much lighter and slightly muddy looking compared to my other chinchillas, including my blue chins.

The chinchilla gene wipes out the yellow pigments and the chocolate gene lightens the black.

I don't have access to any chocolates to test my theory, nor the cage space :D but perhaps you could try the cross. A chocolate buck with a chin, REW or Cali marked parent would be ideal to breed to Mroz.

One or two are light like this, noticed the others have darker bellies. But its hot out, so I didn't spend that much time taking pics.
