Hi everybody, I'm new here :)

About 4 days ago, my doe gave birth to a beautiful and healthy litter of 7. I am a bit curious about the colors of some of the kits, so if you could help, that would be great! :D

The buck is broken blue tort and the doe is a vienna marked agouti harlequin... I don't know if that's what it's called in English, but she's a VM harlequin with white belly, white inside the ears and by the nose. I was thinking these kits are either blue tort or fawn/cream (not sure which to use in English for lionhead cross... I'm from Scandinavia btw). One is a bit more blue in color than the rest. But they are all very light colored.

Buck's dad was also broken blue tort. I think his mom was black. Doe's mom is VM blue tort, and her dad is BEW. Her siblings were BEW, blue, harlequin and possibly a black tort.

Thanks!

Looks like a bunch of fawns and blue fawns which is odd as I would have expected a few harlequins or a tri

Could you post a picture of the parents and the other kits, maybe in 1 or 2 group shots so we can compare side by side.

Thanks for the reply! :) Sure I can! The more blue kit looks a lot more like its siblings today, besides from being the smallest one. I will take better photos of the whole litter later, with the help of my boyfriend. My phone camera isn't the best.

I'm also curious about one of the kits with broken pattern. Is has dark spots on its ears... can it be because the mom is harlequin? Or is it something else?

__________ Fri Apr 25, 2014 10:52 am __________

Here's a much more color accurate photo of three of the fawn/blue tort(?) kits. One of them has a strange dark spot on its back...

Because the doe has very few black markings I am not surprised the kits look fawn. They might get dark ribbons latter on. The dark spot is likely the harlequin gene showing through and I bet the dark spot gets bigger with time.

Newborn fawn and harlequin kits will have darker eye rings and ears because their skin is black, once they fur up the white fur covers it.

Usually torts have darker nose and ear points than theses but the mom is a rather pale harlequin so her tort kits could be pale as well. As the babies get more fur you should be able to tell the torts from the fawns by belly colour - fawns/Harlis will be whiteish and torts will be slate blueish (blue torts will be a lighter blue)

Because the doe is not a dark rich red I suspect none of the kits are blue fawn (or tort) and are just a faded black fawn (or tort). If they are blues in the litter then when the kits eyes open the dilute/blue ones could have greyish eyes.

In the picture it looks like the broken kit is a brighter orange and I would say for certain he/she is agouti based.

I am very puzzled by the "black" kit  as genetically it should be impossible for a tort and harli to produce one. Is it possible the doe was bred by another buck? Are you certain your broken blue buck tort is a tort and not a self blue?

Thank you so much for the reply! :) I'm excited to see what they turn out to be! And yes, the broken pattern one is a lot more orange in color than the rest.

Yes, actually she had an "incident" with another buck, a VM black (the son of my broken blue tort male) and they probably bred as well. I've been told it's possible that there are two fathers to this litter, but I wasn't sure. Yeah he's a broken blue tort because his color is a bit blue-yellow and not blue/gray. He looks just like this one in color: http://snoflinganskaniner.weebly.com/up ... 1_orig.jpg :)
