We just got our new blue checkered giant doe named Blu and we just love her and were just wondering if there were any other CG breeders around?

We used checkered giant to make our meat mutts but I've since sold them. They had quite a temper and got in to everything. One doe could not be trusted in colony because she'd go on killing sprees of anything smaller than her including her own kits.

I raised Checkers in the 1980's and they didn't have the repetition they have now, of being mean and ill tempered. I would take a look at the Checkered Giant national club. Most of the breeders would be in the Ill/IN/OH area. Good Luck , keep us updated.

They had that reputation in the 80's too. At least in the Illinois area where I was showing as a kid.

CattleCait raises Checkereds, or she did anyway. They were escape artists, but she loved them. :)

She hasn't been very active on RT lately, but hopefully she will see this thread and chime in on their personalities.

If you do find them to be bad tempered, you can select for temperament and breed some nicer ones. It will probably be a rather difficult project since it is so hard to get the correct markings, but it is doable. I am sure there are lines out there with nicer attitudes, so if you do find a breeder that might be one question you want an answer to before buying stock.

I guess as a young 4-H'er I didn't realize that.

My doe so far has a good personality she comes to the door when we open the cage and we can all pet her but we haven't had her long and we will see what puberty brings lol

Love the look of the Checkered Giant, but there really wasn't many in my area. Did get a big rabbit, a Flemish Giant. Just the sweetest thing. Growing big and going through a doofy stage, lol. Didn't know though that the Checkered Giant had a reputation. Hopefully your doe keeps that good personality through those puberty months. Would love to see pics of her.

if you look down her back you can see the colour is "off" from black. She's a very deep blue from what I can tell. :) have fun with her. :)

Thanks! I tried to post more pics of her but it keeps telling me they are too small :/ she is a dark blue almost every pic makes her look black :)

Maybe PM's MaggieJ or MamaSheepDog, they can help you with your pics. I post pics by Photobucket. Just easier for me.

I take a lot of pics myself and have a hard time getting the coloring right on my pics. Some colors are tough. I get lucky once in a while. Thank heavens for digital, lol.

She is very lovely. Just love the pattern of Checkered.
