I believe that a buck is more important to a herd than any single doe. The genetics of a herd buck is spread throughout the whole herd. I don't keep very many of the bucks that are born into my herd. If they are not something I would keep myself they are sold at the sale barn. I linebreed so the buck is a very important part of my breeding program. The doe is also very important but the role of the buck, to me, is key.
Also with a buck you breed to several does and get to see the results of the breeding over a range of different bloodlines faster than with a single doe.
Now my pricing for "proven" does is higher. One that consistantly produces good young and is a good mother is worth her cost. But, breed her to a low quality buck and all bets are off.
My "hobby" is showing rabbits. Even if one is just raising for meat production I belive the reasons I've given are still true.
