Last night I put about 3 sprigs of parsley and 3 or four 1/2" pieces of celery in each doe's cage of 6 week old kits, and just saw one kit have liquid diarrhea. No other symptoms have been noted. I am about to isolate it and watch for any others that may have it, so I may not respond right away.

It might be the celery. Did you wash it really well? Because of the grooves, it tends to hold nasties such as e-coli. Put any affected kits on a grass hay and kitchen oatmeal diet for a few days. If you can find leaves of blackberry, strawberry or raspberry, or any shepherd's purse or plantain, these help clear up poopy butt.

Thanks, Maggie. I did rinse it well, but only in cold water. Maybe vinegar would be a smarter option in the future. The little guy is isolated and has hay and oats only. I'll get him some berry leaves if any have popped up in the garden. He actually went potty on a slice of wood, which was covered in nastiness, so it could be it was urine, and not diarrhea at all. I put the tray under the hospital cage and am waiting for him to potty.

I had something like this happen to Mocha with storebought parsley....probios brought her out of it...

Parsley was on sale for .58 cents a bunch.

__________ Wed Feb 29, 2012 1:27 pm __________

 Rinse all store bought produce in ACV! :p

i'm pretty careful about greens with young kits. my nursing does will usually get stuff like this in the summer but i feed it just to her, i don't let the babies get any. once they are weaned i'll introduce some greens slowly. the only thing my 8 week and younger kits get is hay and oats and pellets. i just feel like its a bit risky.

It was a false alarm! He has totally normal poop and is back with his family. :)

You can say that again! Poor Mysterious has a huge bill to pay for his trip to the hospital cage. The charges add up so quickly- you wouldn't believe the mark up they put on the oatmeal! :x

So glad he's okay!

I try to be especially careful with greens from the grocery store. I don't generally feed the rabbits celery but I'd give them parsley if I found it cheap. Well-washed, of course.

Thanks, Maggie.

I intend to grow most of their vegis, but I couldn't resist getting them some fresh greens to help with vitamins A & E. Celery was on sale, too, and I know there isn't much nutritional value to it, but I wanted them to have a treat. I also bought cilantro for them.

There is grass and filaree now, so I can start feeding some weeds, and my clover is coming up too. I know those are free from pesticides and contaminants!
