Yeah don't buy shaggy looking rex. lol

It must be my twisted brain but your words made me think of a seedy looking man in a trench coat with shaggy looking rex bunnies strapped to the inside saying "Psssssst, wanna buy a bunny?"

LMBO Exactly!!!!

I would personally pic up the minis and cross them with your NZ or Rex and Go from there. I am more adventurous and not so purist at this point. Others will say wait until you find Standards. I think its a matter of personal feelings on the subject.

I am doing some crosses for Rex but my Otters will all be Pedigree Standard Rex bought from show breeders. But thats just me!!!

It's just that rex have enough problems as it is, you're gonna loose something in the fur by crossing, it's inevitable, then placing those Rex back into the gene pool. Even as pets, some will find their way into the gene pool. It's never as simple as playing with one gene and only that gene. You may get Rex fur, then mess up the modifier for putting thick fur on the feet, and wind up with thinner Rex fur, and have a bunch of rabbits prone to sore hocks. Or you may start getting prominent guard hairs, which I have and tried to play with and just decided to cull.

The two rex I have already have sore hocks but my NZs have GREAT hocks, tough and wire proof.

Am picking up two FREE four month old mini rex does tomorrow, a REW and a broken black.

I am so excited!!!

Am I right that mini rabbits are ready to breed at 4 months or is it 6 for them too?

What I breed will NOT be sold as standard rex rabbits EVER! But if I manage to get good hocks and a proper rex coats, I will be very happy with them..

Wishing you luck with your new ones. I've read around 5 months for the smaller breeds. So sounds like once they settle in, they will be ready to start.

Congrats on the purchases. I picked up a NZ buck the other day to cross with my minis too. :)

Picked them up today. The broken black is much bigger than the REW and BOTH have bitten my youngest son. Not break the skin hard but pinch/nip/make small boy cry hard.

Settling in rabbits get one get out of the cooking pot card. One more bite and they are outta here!

I have one spitting mad doe here that is going to fc as soon as she raises the expected litter. Hope your little one isn't scared of bunnies now. I let the boys keep 2 house bunnies. The rest are off limits.

minis are notoriously nasty, so they say. mines aren't. do be careful with the paring of size difference between NZW and mini rex. NZW sized buck and mini doe can spell trouble.

I crossed my NZ does to my mini bucks. :)

The NZ buck is young and will be for future use to correct body type if needed. He is a really well built brick.

I have a very nice pair of NZ x harlequin magpies, and a couple younger magpie does. I plan to cross their nicest doe kits and myI younger two(eventually) with my mini rex bucks. I have two really nice black and castor bucks. And then I have a broken doe to add in the mix once I get a harli. :) About two years down the road I may have my Rex coated magpies and Harli buns.

All of my breeders are very pet-able but not hug-able so I thought these two would do both but am not sure now. Will give them a few days to settle in, build another cage so they can be seperated - seller said the broken black was very protective of the rew and she was the one who gave the worst bite - and see how they are then.

So far I have NOT been impressed with any rex I have met. Beautiful fur but grumpy, standoffish sore hocked things.

My Rex are sweet rabbits. I have one who I call Evil Blue, but she is not always testy, and is good out of the cage. Flurry is also rather standoffish, and Magma is grumpy and grumbles at me. All of the bucks are very nice, and the rest of the herd of does love to be pet.

I would give them a little time to settle in, and if you end up breeding them, try to handle the kits daily if you can.

By then I should have my rex coated and harlequin NZs.

Having a breeding project is fun! Not just breeding to sell or eat but an actual "This is what I want to produce!"

Most of mine are testy, standoffish and grouchy. I didn't raise any of my seniors except Kipper and Jax though. All but one has sore hocks. It's a hard thing to get rid of, all about the fur texture. Good Rex texture gives you soft feet, good foot furring gives you harsh coat texture.

And there you go, the answer to a question I hadnt even asked yet :!:

I love you guys! :D

A rex coated NZ would just be considered a rex since they have the same body type. It could be shown and sold as a rex. It just wouldn't have a full pedigree yet and personally I'd disclose the NZ breeding but some wouldn't. To get the rex coat if you are using a mini rex it would be better to breed the rex to 2 NZ and cross the half siblings to get your rex coated offspring. Otherwise if you breed back to the mini rex you will lose too much size. That's how we did our creme d'argent x mini rex. I crossed 2 bucks to my creme doe and then kept 1 buck from the first litter and 1 doe from the second to cross together. Real nice interesting colored rabbits. Especially since I used chocolate mini rex. I got all sorts of partially silvered colors including a harlequin and torts.
Do you have pictures of the cross breeds? My plan is to cross Champagne D'Argent rabbits with rexes and I would like to get an idea of how they'll look :)

While the coat is the single biggest modifier that sets the Rex breed apart there are other traits that come into play.

Dew lap & head shape are significantly different from a NZ .... Sure they share body type but that's where the similarities end.

In my opinion , a rex coated NZ (or any other cross) is just a rex coated mutt ... Shouldn't be shown or sold as a Rex.

How does the dewlap differ? I have Rex now and have had NZs in the past and the dew laps seem rather the same to me. The butt rolls now, Rex sure do have lots of extra skin round their back sides!

What dew lap on a NZ ?!

All my NZs had dewlaps big enough to use as pillows, even my bucks had small dewlaps! Red, White, Blue all had them.
