What is the going rate for rabbit carcasses for snakes per pound?

When do people switch from feeding multiple adult rats to rabbits instead?

And finally- I assume they are dispatched using cervical dislocation as opposed to blunt force trauma?

You only want one person to respond ?

My best guess for changing over to rabbits from rats, is the size of the snake.
The bigger they get, the bigger the meal they want.
The one fellow I sell to, his biggest snake is going to be able to handle a
10 pound rabbit in the spring. And no I have not met any of his snakes.
Nor do I want to. But I will find him bunnies to feed his pets.

No, of course not, lol! But Millinex has some whopper snakes which were the reason for raising rabbits in the first place, so I figured would know the supply and demand sides of the question. :)

Generally I can order them/similar animals for between $1.50-2.50 a lb. Frozen, whole, it really depends. If you charge anywhere near what it would cost to just buy a rabbit from a pet store, you won't get business. I charge significantly less. If you market them at $1-2 a lb you'll usually be in good shape.

It's not as much when people switch, as much as when the snake switches, or when prey is available. I have hatchlings that I start on rabbit pinks straight out of the egg, because they are available to me. Some don't switch to rabbits until the largest rats just aren't cutting it.. Big rats are $2-5 each, my small males at 10-12feet can put down 4 rats at a time (more if I let them), and that's $20, where as a rabbit similar size would cost me less than half that. Some snakes also refuse to switch to certain prey. I have a male who only eats rats.

Yes, I use cervical dislocation. I don't like to have to thaw a rabbit only to have it have blood everywhere after it's warmed up, that's no bueno.

If you want to sell for snake food, be ready for many sizes. My smallest female is about 6 foot now and taking small/medium guniea pigs or small rabbits, around the 1lb range. My biggest female just put down a 22lb flemish female and is still looking for more.

__________ Fri Nov 01, 2013 3:27 pm __________

You're also lucky, we don't have the same laws for banning sized snakes, CA has a TON of big snake breeders and owners, who own large constrictors 10ft+.

How big is your snake that can handle a 22 pound rabbit ?
My guess is that it would take at least 2 people to handle her ?
Does she stay in her cage all the time ?

The guy I am selling to has over 60 snakes, all different sizes.
I know he feeds rats as well as rabbits. Also he like guinea pigs.
I been asked to save any newborns that don't make it.

She's 18ft. I handle her alone often. She's let out sometimea but mostly in the cage.

My son has a big snake. I call her a dangerous animal.
This is his 3rd one he has owned. I hope he rehomes her soon.

I consider dogs dangerous animals too but I don't think everyone should rehome their dogs....

Well I don't tell my son what to do with his pets.
He is the one who mentioned rehoming his snake at some point in the future.
I just listened. I want to say the snake is 10 ft plus.
A red tail boa.
And the rat/s is not appeasing her appetite now. She wants another one.
I just want to learn more about snakes...but from a safe distance.
Not a pet for me, but I respect people who know how to take care of them.

We have 2 dogs. The old one is 16. The vet wanted to put him to sleep
when he was neutering him for us at 1 year old. The dog was a basket
case. We rescued him from his first home. He finally mellowed out.
The vet thought he was dangerous due to his niping. The dog was lucky
we found him when we did. The first owners almost put him down.
He was on borrowed time, when we came along.
