Underneath the fur, there are approximately 6 cal satin babies. My first litter of them in a LONNNNNNNNG time!!!

I also wound up fostering a couple of newborn white satins into the litter, as the mother wasn't taking care of them.

Su-u-re there are...

When do we get to see actual popples? Hmm?

Congratulations! I can't wait to see them. (Hint, hint.)

Oh, alright!!!

Big Bundle o' Babies (640x480).jpg

But you'll have to trust me that this doe officially has her work cut out for her for the next 6-7 weeks. There are now between 10-12 babies in the box now, mostly cals, but nearly as many whites.

Stratus (white satin grand champion) had a baby about 48 hours ago. It died. but I'm thinking she still looked a bit plump. Waited another several hours, she had a couple more. I fostered them to the cal, but still thinking she looked a little plump. Sure enough, she had 3 more today. I think she's finally done with it.

The reason I fostered them was because Stratus wasn't caring for them, but she has awesome bloodlines (as does Big Show, the buck I bred her to) and I need her whites for the fall shows.

For those of you who may be wondering about a rabbit's mothering instincts, this next picture illustrates it.

This cal doe only gave birth to approximately 6 babies of her own. The rest are bunnies which were fostered from Stratus. There are approximately 11 babies in the box. As you can see, there are 2 groups inside the nest box. She is literally feeding them in separate groups. I guess there are only so many teats to go around at one time.

Wow! That is amazing! I suspected you were going to say she separated hers from the newbies, but I see that she didn't.

It's only day 3, but so far everything seems to be moving along well with the fostered litter project. As you can see in these pics, their base coats are starting to reveal themselves, and in pic # 2 you can see the Cal Satin mom is still separating them for feeding time.

10 days old and the babies are doing fine. A few are even getting their eyes open:

And yes, I had to peel back the fur/hay mix to get the ones in the middle of the box into the picture. As ya'll can see, the cals are yet to start showing their markings. With the onset of summer, it may be a while for that.

Glad you finally got Maggie straightened out on her terminology!

Look at all those cuties, lined up in a row! Hogging the resting board too!

Mary Ann, it pretty much comes down to having to clean out the doe & litter trays more frequently, i.e. every couple of days. It definitely will do so with this crew. Imagine 11 rabbits using the same toilet every day.

I use a light layer of pine shavings in all my pans, but in the picture the "shavings" are Equine Fresh pellets. I tried it to see if there was any kind of noticeable and appreciable difference between that and shavings. There are some positives, but in the end, it costs considerably more over time to use the pellets and will switch back to shavings when the supply of pellets I have runs out. Other than that, I use nothing else on them.

And of course, missing from the picture are a couple of bunnies who were busy getting their own private "Teat Time" while the rest of the crew slept. :p

yes, Will that many rabbits in a cage. Cleaning would be more often. I started to use peatmoss as i had a thread on the cage trays. SOmeone i cant remember right now . Is doing this and suggested it. I have started using it and i love it. It does cost the same as shavings. But less smell ,less cleaning, and very good for the garden as the shavings isnt good for the garden. Give it a try
