I Have a question about Broken rabbits. I have a REW NZ doe. Her pedigree shows a Steel Broken on top with brokens and REW rabbits behind it. On the Bottom it shows a Broken Red with solid Reds and Broken Red rabbits behind it. If I Breed my Black NZ buck to the REW doe (with REW, Broken, and Solid in pedigree) What are the chances that I get some Brokens in the litter. Just curious, I am looking to get a few Brokens in my breeding Program.
thanks for any input.

You will only get brokens if your REW is a broken. REW hides the true color of the rabbit- she could be a solid steel or other color genetically.

If you breed her to your buck and get brokens, you will know she is a broken herself. Statistically, you should get half broken and half solid... but that is over the long term, not per litter.

:yeahthat:
Since both of your does parents were broken she could have gotten ...
- two broken genes (called a 'Charlie') and will only have broken kits when bred to a solid/self black
- one broken gene so she should produce 50% broken kits when bred to your buck
- no broken gene so will never produce brokens

Remember that any REW kits she produces could secretly carry the broken gene but it is hidden under their white coat.

There is a 75% chance she carries broken so the odds are in your favour :D

If she is broken herself. As Dood said, no broken gene, no brokens. So if you get a broken kit in a litter, you will know she is a broken, and therefore the REWs could be broken as well.

Ok, sounds good! She is due on Wednesday, I will keep you updated.

__________ Sun Jul 28, 2013 11:20 pm __________

So, she finally had the litter today .... And yes she had some brokens. She went 35 days rather than 31! Does that happen very often. I have a doe that is always 32 or 33 days, but never 35! Also, she had 6 kits and 2 were born dead. Could that have anything to do with it?

Congrats on your new litter.
Happens to me all the time. Very rarely do I get one that kindles on day 31. More like 34-36.

Sometimes one has something to do with it, and sometimes no. Mola had 9 live, on day 35. The last two litters where born on day 29. 9 all three times all live.
