Got an NZ doe to breed for the first time 3 days ago and today she has a watery/bloody discharge showing,,,,could she have aborted?? She seems to be eating good.

If so...when could I rebreed??

The fertilized eggs don't implant in the uterine horns until day nine, so there is nothing to abort yet. :)

Many people mistake orange urine for blood. Rabbits pee in a rainbow of colors and different consistencies. When they are ridding the body of excess calcium the urine can become quite thickened, which in combination with the dark orange color would resemble blood.

I remember the first time one of my buns had red pee... I was pretty sure she was dying and it was all my fault ;). She didn't die, though, and I learned to just ignore the colour of the pee, to keep myself from freaking out!

I don't think it's urine....it is thick enough to hang onto wire floor?? By waterery I ment not a bright red color but rather diluted red color.

I have seen the redish color urine you speak of but this seems different.

Thanks for your thoughts. Lowell

I've seen it and had the following happen

1. pregnant but aborted around day 20
2. pregnant did just fine, smaller than normal litter though (usually 8 had four)
3. NOT pregnant by day 31, never saw anything else.

So.... what it means for YOUR doe? I dunno. :)

Just a bit of an up-date...doe gave birth to 2 babies that were dead. Not sure if they died after birth or born dead. It was does first litter. She made a nest and pulled fur and they were born in the nest box.

How long should I wait to re-breed??

If she is looking fit and in shape and her vulva is looking in shape I wouldn't wait another second. I would breed her yesterday and today.

:yeahthat:

I'm sorry she lost the kits.

I would check both the doe and buck for any signs of vent disease before breeding, since she had that strange discharge. Hopefully it was just a random event, but better safe than sorry. :)
