Cost averaged it is costing me just about $0.25/lb to grow these for the family and my rabbits. How's this for super nutritious natural food?!?

Very cool. I have not had any of my BOSS or oats sprout, just mold. Where are you getting yours from? Are they from prepackaged seed?

Oh yes you can and they are great for you! They have a mild nutty flavor and can be eaten anyway you'd eat lettuce. I really love them in a veggie stir fry, AWESOME! (And this is coming from a former U.S. Marine tough dude).

You're gonna think I am crazy, but I bought them at Rural King. They are packaged as a 40lb bag of wild bird food. The hippie at the local health food store assured me he had checked into them, that they are safe to eat and packaged at one of the same places that the sprouting companies online gets their seeds from.

If you can't find them locally try wheatgrasskits.com Quite a bit pricier, but in bulk not too painful.

I have a sprouter, and have never had a problem ever growing anything in my life. Had my first plant at seven grew so well my mom took it back. But for the life of me, I have not been able to get the BOSS and oat seeds to sprout. Though maybe my brand I bought was too processed or something. Maybe it was just too cold in Ohio?

It's gotta be the temps then...

My house is freezing, I never heat the house itself, only enough to keep the pipes from freezing, about 40F.

so Joe you just put down some earth in that tray and plant boss and water and that is it.

__________ Sat Jun 09, 2012 9:26 am __________

What you never heat your house. You dont stay in your house? Or is it just for your rabbits. :D

I don't really heat my house either. Houseplants don't do well. I don't feel the cold as much as the heat. As long as pipes don't freeze I can always add clothing.

Soak the seeds for 12 hours first and watch the youtube video for the rest of the process. Easy to do, but a bit more than I want to type.

I'm only in the house during sleeping hrs. It's a waste of money to try to heat that old drafty thing. I only use two rooms, the bedroom and bathroom, and occasionally the microwave, which I might just put in my bedroom. I've got a space heater, and a kerosene heater, four down quilted and a heated blanket/pad. I no longer grow house plants because of the lack of light as well, I have building on three sides of me and a tree on the fourth side.

Sounds like us when we lived in a 5th wheel while building our house. We only went inside to use the bathroom or sleep. We did most of our cooking outside on a camp stove and firepit.

I'm considering building an outdoor grill. I can sit and watch the dogs play and cook in the summer, it will help smoke away the flies, and i can make coffee on it and warm my hands in the winter

Actually Joe i tried before i posted. BUt that video is no longer working.

__________ Sat Jun 09, 2012 2:54 pm __________

skythelimit was are your winters like?

Actually Joe i tried before i posted. BUt that video is no longer working.

Take 12 ounces of BOSS, clean all the crud out/sort them and soak overnight for 12 hours.

Okay, fill a 20"x10" nursery tray, with drain holes, with 2" of soil. Sprinkle your soaked seeds evenly, no need to fuss, just spread them out. Put tray of soil and seeds into another 20"x10" tray w/o holes to catch excess water. Lightly water and set anywhere that gets a little air circulation.

Place a 3rd tray on top of your seeds, like you were stacking them up. Place a 2"thick paperback book on each side of the tray. Some weight is important because it forces the sprouts to sprout evenly.

Daily give a light watering. About day three sprouts will have pushed top tray with books up to about even with the top of the planted tray. Now take the empty 3rd tray, turn it upside down, put away books now, and set it on top of the sprouting tray. You are purposely blokcing the light out. You want the sprouts to grow vigorously right now, not green up.

About day 5 the sprouts will be pushing the upside down tray up. Now it's time to remove the third tray completely. Let the sprouts/micro greens "green" and grow for a couple more days and start to harvest. I find that you have about 5-7 days to use them from day seven of planting. Some people just harvest the whole flat at day 7 when they are ready.

Great food for the rabbits and you. I am excited about having this during the winter when greens are scarce. I am hoping everyone stays more healthy and producing well despite the winter! I eat them in salads, veggie stir fry and sandwiches. Rabbits like them plain. LOL. HTH,

Joe
