Biting

Hello all,
I have been reading posts for quite some time and thought I would join in and ask a question.

I have a Ca. Buck and 2 Ca- Nz mix does and a Flemish Giant doe.
Yesterday I bred the Flemish doe for the first time. She has always been a sweetheart, but today when I reached in her pen she bit me, and every time I reached in to try and get her hay rack she would charge and try and bite.
I have heard that Flemish can be mean when they have little ones, but is it possible she knows she's pregnant and her mood has changed or is there maybe something else going on?

Some of mine do that, my line of thinking is they are afraid I will move them to the buck again. After a few days, they stop. But usually do the same each time after breeding or attempting to bred them.

Hormones kicked in. Some rabbits are just plain mean when bred or really ready to be bred. Often if they don't chill after a few days these are best culled unless you like wearing gloves to handle your rabbits all the time. It's easier when they are mean while not bred or raising a litter because so long as you keep them in condition you can keep breeding them.

I intend to bribe mine, with whole oats. They love the oats, more than they are pissed at me. What happened to me, is at the following thread.

As for the biting, I agree that if she is a first time breeder, she is probably peeved at you :cheesysmile: Divas can be like that

One way to get her "over it" would be to put your hand in the cage up near the top and reach over her head and gently gather her up and pull her out and cuddle her for a few minutes, then put her back. Do that each time you have a few minutes over the next couple of days and she will get over being put out about the whole thing. And, like most divas, an exceptional treat is perfectly acceptable as a bribe.

Mine panic whenever I open their cages for the first few days after they're bred. Seems they don't want to go visit the rabbitry barbarian again, and the memory of their recent visit is still too fresh.

Then they warm up again.

Hi Crunch, Welcome to Rabbit Talk. My first time Mom, was like that for a couple days after I bred her. Kind of freaked out from the experience. I did the same thing AnneClaire suggested. She settled down in a few days and the memory of the new experience vanished and she's my sweet girl again. Fingers crossed for healthy popples in 31 days.

Mine dosnt bite... I wouldnt tolerate that. But if they think i am bring them back to buck cage again. Which i dont do anymore. They back off in the corner and grunt...

I have also had some maiden does get very upset with me and even charge me when put back in their cage. Some will hold a grudge for days, and call me all kinds of terrible names when they see me. It always makes me feel guilty, like I forced them to enter into "marital relations" against their will! Now I always give them a treat of some kind when I put them back, but some will not eat my peace offering until later when they are not in so much of a snit.

I have three maiden does. And they are all upset with me but only one is bred. My lionhead doe is all good though, she's been bred before.

Thank you for the insight and it appears you all were correct. Today she was still a little shy but she was no longer charging and trying to bite and the apple treat seemed to help.
