It's for a processor wanting to meet USDA regulations. They want to develop a new set of protocols for processing rabbits under USDA approval here in Missouri. I'm sure they'll want to change a few of my steps, but that's okay.

I've shown several visitors how to process a rabbit. They are surprised how quickly it can be done. One of my buyers stopped by to pick up a load of (23) fryers headed to this new station. He was curious, having never seen one processed before. I did a couple for him, just to show him my methods.

I didn't know it, but on the second one, he timed me with his cell-phone. "I didn't know those things had a timer!!" 5:49:32....a shade under six minutes from picking up the live rabbit until I dropped the cleaned carcass in my cold water bucket...and I was visitin' with him while I did it, harvesting the liver, heart, and kidneys as well.

I've got a friend who's a professional photographer. He does videos as well. I'm gonna give him a call later this evening and set up a date to do the deed. It'll be an interesting experience....if nothing else.

BTW: My buyer sold all of the fryers to chefs before he got home last night. He was excited when he called me this morning, and tickled to death on how quick they sold. Plus,(he told me) my name will be on the marquis as the producer of the customer's meal.

I didn't like the idea at first. But, the more I thought about it...the better I liked it. IF they used the name "Grumpy" instead of my own. "I don't want a bunch of folks poundin' on my doors!" I told him. He laughed and answered, "Okay. That's fine. "Grumpy" it is, then"

He said to me...."THEY WANT MORE!!" All I can produce as a matter of fact. The money's a heckuva lot better..too. I get my base price per pound, plus 50% of the profits above the processing and transportation fees. :D

:p A bit of good news for a change. :p

Grumpy.

Grumpy Buns has a certain ring to it :p

Congrats on the good news! You work so hard for it, it is well deserved.

How exciting!

Now, you do know of course, that we will want to see the video when it is done?

I for sure would like to see that video, I'd love to learn how to cut my processing time.

:congratulations: Very nice Grumpy!! And yes, we will definitely be wanting to see that video as well...to..uh...proof watch it and make sure nothing is wrong..yeah, that's it.

Sounds like it might be time to expand the business!

I've searched over the years trying to find a man, or woman, who would be fair and honest in their dealings with me. I believe I've finally met one. He raises, range chickens, grass-fat cattle, and finished hogs. Only, he doesn't sell to the middle-man. He deals directly with some of the top restaurants here in the mid-west. He and I "argued" over what I felt would be a fair price for my fryers. I told him what I would take.He argued it wasn't enough. "You've got to make a good profit, Grumpy. Or you won't stay in business."

Well, I couldn't argue with that logic. Consequently, we struck the deal I mentioned in my first post. I fully intend on expanding the herd. Once I gather enough "money" to get the job done. There are numerous programs the USDA offers in low interest 1% loans or outright grants for producers of organic, locally grown livestock and produce. I would prefer to "swing" the deal out of my own pocket. You'd be surprised how far I can stretch a dollar. LOL.

On a "lark" I placed an ad on Craigslist for Rabbit Manure. You'd be surprised how many responses I've gotten. I've got plans on the table for air-dried manure in re-purposed feed bags turned inside out.

I'm gonna keep workin' this deal until the only thing I can't sell off of a rabbit is the "HOP". How about Solar-Dried ears for chew toys for cats and dogs?

I'll share the video with this forum once it's produced.

Have a good night, all. My meds are startin' to kick-in. Besides, I've been humpin' all day cleanin' house. My boy, Reggie, graduates this comin' Sunday. We're plannin' on a houseful of folks.

Wow, grumpy, that's simply amazing that so many great things are happening for you, up to and including your son's graduations. What a big day!

I'm not really sure I could win that "argument" either. When I argue that I don't want as much money and someone argues that I need more money I tend to lose too. So don't feel bad on that one

Also, that really sounds like a good idea about the manure, especially if you have a market there for it. In today's day and age you really need to stretch your produce as absolutely far as you possibly can, making money on whatever and not wasting anything. It sounds like you know what you're doing which probably is the result of years of experience.

As far as the grant or loan goes - I wouldn't be one bit surprised if here in the very near future those started to become more and more prevalent. I've heard say that the government is starting to cut back the uses of chemicals and moving to more of an organic based program, not only for sprays and the like but also for herds. There was a resent study that came out which indicated that organically raised herds, (those which did not have all the vaccines, steroids etc) were healthier and more resilient to different strains of diseases than the chemically treated ones. (Imagine that.) So it shouldn't be too difficult to find one, if not now, than in the near future.

I'd LOVE to see a video of your processing. I'd buy a DVD if you ever make one. I'm a newbie who will be processing for the first time next spring, if not sooner. Congratulations - wishing you all good things!

Hey way to go there Grumps. Sometimes you just got to meet the right person. And you sure did. Just a little curious on your deal there with the 50% above profits and transportation. How do you calculate that in?

Outstanding news all the way around Grumpy! Congrats! Looking forward to seeing the video when it's done
