stop it.

just.
stop.
It's not fair tempting us with these adorable little cuties when you are so far away!

Adorable!

Is there a lot of magpie in the background of the first litter? That's how those white toes show up, when Japanese and magpie are crossed...its a pain for show breeders, but pet stores like them!

 I was thinking the same thing! But Hubby would throw a wall-eyed horse-fit if I get any more rabbits before we get into our own place again (sometime this fall). I'm still trying to figure out how to convince him to let me breed what I have. I SO want some harlies, though--or at least harlie-marked Rexes, or something! I just LOVE their colorings!

if you still have some in about four weeks you can probably help fill an order out to one of the eastern provinces.

There is indeed magpie breeding in the background of these guys. I like using mismarks for breeding, they make nice brood does and your correct, pet people love them.

Ladysown - Do you mean for meat? If so, that is most certainly not happening. I cannot send my little babies for meat, I love them, haha.

no, not for meat. this guy out east is looking for breeders. can't find any out in the eastern provinces and wants a trio.

I have been looking for harlequin for several months. They don't have any in my area Washington state. You stated that you can ship. How does that work and is it safe for them. Plus what is the cost?

Jeannag,

MaryAnn of MaryAnn's rabbitry just had some rabbits shipped from Ca. to Canada, and she said it cost over $200 per rabbit. If you can find some in the continental US it will be cheaper. Or maybe you could plan a road trip to Canada! We went when I was a kid, and it was so beautiful... in fact, Hubs and I took our Honeymoon there!

Beautiful babies! I hesitate to say anything at all, but one thing to think about is maybe trying to get away from using mismarks as breeding stock if at all possible for the sake of the breed and other breeders. I know you say you like using them and they are really cute, but white feet are one of those traits that pop up unexpectedly in Japanese litters generations down the road. They are an automatic disqualification even in a perfectly marked and typed rabbit and that can be really disappointing and so hard to tell which side of the pedigree it came from or if both sides carry it. In a breed with a limited gene pool to begin with, it benefits everyone if traits that are unacceptable aren't used for breeding stock. That way the best kits in the litters can be shown/bred instead of passing on undesirable characteristics. You have some great color and face splits going on. Some of the mismarks looks to have nice banding as well- would have been awesome if they were showable, too. :)

Best of luck,

Lauren

Thanks for letting me know Mamasheepdog, I would like to get a male and female and have a few kits. Since it is so hard to find here in our state(s) Plus for 4H. Will keep looking.....looking....looking

my approach to mismarks is to cull them out of a breeding program...whether that's to critter food or to a pet home. But known mismarks don't stick around.

I have talked to a couple of breeders lately who like using mismarks, a lady I have on facebook really likes using them, she said she finds they produce better colored magpies. I have a mismark jap doe from a good friend of mine, and she produces nicely. I have no issues with using them, I know some breeders cull them out, but everyone has different breeding goals I suppose! I am slowly culling mine out, as I have no need for mismarks at this point.

:)

How do they make better colored Magpies? Like...better marked? Better color? White can't really be improved...I'm not sure how it would improve the markings because that's unrelated to the color.

I do know that crossing Mags with Japs really wreaks havoc in a Japanese program because those white toes lead to white toenails which are SO hard to breed out. They also lighten up the color a lot, and then you lose that intensity edge on the show table.

I'm just stating from experience.

I have never had any issues interbreeding, infact, I know several breeders who breed japs to mags & don't have any issues, I think it's all personal preference.

I find it intensifies the colors of my mags, it could be coincedence I suppose.

there is a reason why I only breed magpies. That whole white foot thing drove me crazy and I chose not to mess with it. Lovely, showable rabbit... with a stupid white foot. ARGH!!!! Can still get them with the magpies...but it's not so stinking obvious and therefore disappointing.

I am lookong for a couple for my kids. I just signed them up for 4-H. We looked through all the different breeds and they were really interested in the Harlequins.

Where in Ontario are you located? I'm in Michigan, 35 miles from the border.

I'll have to look in to rules about bringing animals into the U.S. Would you happen to known of any quarantine rules or any reason I wouldn't be able to?

Thanks, Brian
