I recently purchased 2 Sani Nest nesting boxes from bass equipment. I figured I would ask if any of you have experience with them as far as did you install them on the bottom of your cages like they show on their website or did you just throw them inside the cage when you needed it. I don't want to cut holes in perfectly good cages if someone has had issues with them. Also how would you cover them when they are not in use

Thanks

Hi Ctchinman!

:welcomewagon:

I use them and love them. I did not cut holes in my floors- my setup doesn't allow it because I have two tiers of cages with slant boards between the levels. There is no way I would be able to access the top level if they were raised up to allow room for the nests to hang below.

I would also be worried about the does splashing urine on the nest, making it not so "Sani" anymore.

I wasn't interested in buying the waxed liners, and cut my own cardboard for a while, but that got tedious. I bought a 4' x 8' sheet of the plastic wallboard commonly used in commercial bathrooms and had my husband cut panels to fit the bottom and sides. I have panels of varying heights for the sides to allow more or less ventilation depending on the time of year, and attach them with zipties.

The plastic wallboard is easy to clean between litters and so far none of the does have chewed on it.

I did have a case of splay leg in a litter recently because they kept pushing the bedding off of the plastic. So now I place the bottom panel underneath the nest. It costs me a couple of zipties each time because the bedding gets between the wire and the plastic, but that is a small price to pay for non-crippled kits.

Drill some holes in the plastic wall board, it will keep them from slipping and allow for better drainage, plus you won't have to use zipties.... :)

I have the same set up I guess I will be putting them in the cage as needed. The wall board is a great idea. Thanks for the help and the welcomes!

Good idea- but that's a lot of holes to drill! :x When I used cardboard, I went through 8 each nest change, so two isn't too bad. Gotta support my local TSC and the ziptie mfg. too... ;)

Yes, it has saved me a lot of headache. It is a real time saver- just rinse and clean the nest as needed, and you are ready to go! :p
