I have 3 dogs. A shih Tzu she loves the bunnies and she is allowed to come in the rabbitry with me. She loves to eat the bunny poo lol. I also have a chocolate lab x chow who is ok. She knows she isn't allowed to eat them but if one ran from her and i wasn't supervising i know for a fact she would kill it i also have my lanky spaz of a mut dog. He looks to be a red heeler mixed with golden retriever. He is not to be trusted even when im around. How are your dogs around your rabbits?

We have three dogs - two Rotts and an Am Staff. They generally ignore the rabbits. Our rabbits are scattered all over the yard in pens.

I have four german shepherds. Trying to keep them from eating the poo is a full time job. When the cages are open, they eat the rabbit food and drink their water. Occasionally I have seen them press their noses to the buns or lick their faces. The buns don't seem to mind. On several occasions they have captured escape bunnies for me, not harming or mouthing them, just holding them down. Twice one of the dogs picked up a wayward kit that got out of the cage. I caught him both times and made him give the kit to me. Both times the kit was unharmed. So far, so good, I can trust them as well as I trust any carnivorous individual around my rabbits.

We have three dogs also. The Mini Dachshund loves the bunnies she has to check on them every day. The black lab looks at them but has no interest. The Chow/Chihuahua mix is scared to death of them, if we get them out of cages and hold them and bring into the house ...she runs upstairs. None of them have any interest in the poo, now duck poo is a different story. If the rabbit poo smelled and looked like duck poo.

The rescue chow/chihuahua mix.

Our dog goes to and thru the barn with us. She will go cage by cage 'checking ' each one. If the kits are starting to come out of the nest, she will plunk her butt down and watch them whining. I call that her Doggie TV... she is that intent !

Would i trust her if one were to get Out of the cage ??? Not for a second ! She actively hunts moles and field mice... and kills those... i believe she would just as quickly dispatch a bunny. ( but i still luv her ! She's our buddy !!!)

:bunnyhop: ..... :pancake:

In the condo they are both fine. Occasionally Shimo uses the akita as a step ladder to the bed. I question the shiba a little and wouldn't leave her unsupervised but the other dog would kick her butt for touching an animal she wasn't supposed to. We have established rabbits are allowed out of their cages and therefore they are not to be touched. If one of my gerbils or something escaped though it would likely be killed despite the fact I can leave tops off cages and let them stick their noses in there with no issues while I'm cleaning or feeding. Gerbils belong in the cages so they are safe in their cages or shibas would get beat up for it. I don't actually have to do anything because I trained my akita so well from a puppy with sugar gliders, chickens, quail, guinea fowl, guinea pigs, hamsters, abandoned kittens... I've got pics of her with all those animals helping out. She'll pee the kits for me by licking their bottoms when I have to hand feed some. She disciplines everyone below her which is everyone and every thing except me and she's finally decided my husband ranks equal to her but not above.

This is when I spent hours rebuilding the cages and Amako had nothing but the cage base and Zami did not move from that spot the entire time. She just watched the nest box to make sure the kits were safe and waiting to maybe see one.

Now in the colony is another matter. I could order the akita to stay in one spot and she would only try to touch what comes within range but the shiba would probably go on a killing spree. The difference is those rabbits have space to run and it sets off the dogs' prey drives in a way that a rabbit hopping around the condo does not. They are hunting breeds, they just can't help it. My akita will only pin what she catches thinking she's helping me and wait for me to arrive and take what she's captured but the shiba kills anything she catches. It's the same difference as gerbils in a cage versus if they were to get loose. They are running and the dogs think they belong confined so the dogs try to help.

Yes i see that here too. My golden mix came really close to killing my escaped flemish buck. He would have if i hadn't grabbed him and took him inside. His prey drive went into over drive and he chased the poor bunny down. Thankfully a month later my flemish is ok but i was really worried about him at first. He is never around the bunnies now but i really need to train him to leave them alone because i don't want that to happen again.

Supervised my dogs are fine, unsupervised with rabbits in cages no problem. Unsupervised with loose rabbits= dead rabbit, except the boxer she'll hold them but she doesn't know how to kill them

Our back yard is completely fenced in and our buck sandy enjoys a free range life accept for the occonial chase from our two dogs. When we first allowed him to run free the dogs would give him exciting case but with bushes and other things around the yard for him to dive into they had no chance of catching him. After a few days of fruitless cases they lost interest . I noticed that sandy would approach the dogs as they leaded around and would tease them. The two dogs would just give him a look and sandy would jump kick and spring around mocking the dogs. It was the funniest thing. They now live together peacefully giving each other a sniff. When my brother brings his Boston terrier over he give sandy a real run for his money but again no change of catching sandy the speedy rabbit.

My chihuahua mix is three pounds...even the Holland Lop is heavier and more powerful than her. She avoids the rabbits most of the time, though if one is on my lap upstairs and facing away from her, she'll try to sniff it without it noticing. If the rabbit turns around, she scuttles away.

Bingerton, my Cocker...he's just so dumb. XD I don't think he realizes the rabbits are animals. I'd worry he'd mouth a kit to death trying to squeak it like a squeaky toy.

My pugs would probably try to play with the buns if they got out. One day, my pug girl Sasha knocked down a litter pan and was found laying in it, belly up and mouth wide open for bunny berries. The malamute mix chases any bunny that runs, but he's too fat and old to actually catch anything. Still makes me nervous. Everyone likes to lick the babies, though.

I have no idea.... I guess I'll find out in a few months. Tater (boxer) is interested in other dogs, and cats, but I'm not sure he'd kill anything.....at least not on purpose! He ignores birds....and the other wild life in our area really doesn't come out in the day. The kitten/cat at the vets office he gets excited about....but I'm pretty sure he just want's to play with it.

Everyone here is fine...now. But the dober will give chase to a running rabbit. but he loves his guinea pigs. Little dog used to kill everything, but she's golden now. 2 pups are growing up proper with them.

I have three dogs also. The one beagle and the jack russell i would not trust at all. My other beagle she loves the bunnies. I can trust with them. When she see babies. She will sit in front of the cage and whine. She will go to that cage the next day again. If i take one out for her and bring it town to her level. She licks it. She never been a mom but i think she would of been a good one. All my dogs are spayed.

I have one dog, Jake, who actually thinks our bunnies are his. He's very protective of them. But we always supervise when Jake is with the rabbits. Though we feel he wouldn't hurt them, accidents do happen. Always vigilant.

My dogs are all fine with the bunnies. I do let my flemish giants hop around the yard with the dogs and they dont even bother with them. I use my 1 sheltie to capture them, she will herd them and hold them in a corner for me.

Our dogs are good with the rabbits too. Even when they escape occasionally, the dogs haven't gone after them.

Well there are 3 dogs at the farm with the rabbits 2 goldens and a pointer mix. They don't show much interest and I've had 2 rabbits get out and caught them live but not sure I trust them, I know the pointer cross brings wild rabbits home from the pasture. My beagle at home is fine with adults under supervision if they don't run from him. I saw him dispatch a wild kit though so he is supervision only and I ussually lock him in a bedroom or put him outside if I bring them to the house.
