I may have my first litter of English Angoras coming next week and was looking for opinions on what I might expect for colours. I have been told probably a lot of chocolate (which is awesome), but is there a possibility of any of the brokens, black or REW showing up (or are they too far back in the line)? I'm still trying to wrap my brain around all this genetic stuff...

Buck: Chocolate Self
Parents: Sire: Choc. Self, Dam: Choc. Torte
G-Parents: Sire: Choc. Torte, Dam: Blue; Sire: Choc. Torte, Dame: Lilac Torte
GG-Parents: Sire: Choc. Torte, Dam: Choc. Pearl; Sire: Choc. Torte, Dam: Black; Sire: Choc. Torte, Dam: Choc. Pearl; Sire: Fawn, Dam: Torte

Doe: Fawn
Parents: Sire: Broken Fawn, Dam: Fawn
G-Parents: Sire: Fawn, Dam: Broken Fawn; Sire: Choc. Chinchilla, Dam: Choc. Torte
GG-Parents: Sire: Choc. Self, Dam: Fawn; Sire: Broken Blue Torte, Dam: REW; Sire: Choc. Agouti, Dam: REW; Sire: Blue, Dam: Choc. Pointed White

You can only get broken if a parent is broken as it is dominant and cannot hide

You could get some chestnuts (black agouti), Amber (chocolate agouti) Lynx (lilac agouti) and self versions of these (black, chocolate and lilac) and tort and fawn versions of these

IF your doe has been improperly identified as a fawn (black agouti & non extension) and is actually a chocolate fawn then you won't get any black versions of agouti, self, torts or fawns

With the amount of recessives I'm seeing on both sides, there are a lot of things possible, but not to be counted on.. (like a recessive copy of rew pairing up with a recessive cchl gene to make shaded colors...)

I see dilute on both sides of the pedigree, so if both sides inherited a recessive copy of the gene, and your fawn doe is black based and not chocolate based, you could see blue color varieties as well.

Broken is impossible however, since it's visually dominant to almost everything (only hidden by rew or bew), one parent needs to have it to pass it along.

REW can hide for infinite generations but odds are low if there are barely any rew on the pedigree. Same with dilutes (blue and lilac). The fawn doe may not even be carrying chocolate since both parents do not say they are anything but black based and you might just get black versions of things.

With as much color crossing as is totally normal and accepted, how do people ever keep angora colors strait? :?

Tell me about it. There are some rules to it, but with 34 odd colors and show distinction only between white and colored, all kinds of things go on. One of the few colors not accepted-- Otter.

I have a kit right now, can't tell if it's smutty agouti Fawn or a very lightly marked chocolate tort.

Check the eyes if you have a black based rabbit and chocolate to compare it to. Chocolate eyes are usually a softer shade of brown.

I should have remembered that about the brokens - that's the easiest part to remember!!

It's late here, but I will see if I can get a good look at her eyes tomorrow when it's bright. She's not letting me get too close to her right now. She does appear to have some smut on her ears. Can she have that if she's chocolate based, or only if she's black based?

I'm really curious to see what happens next week.

OK, I had a look at her eyes (couldn't wait until tomorrow) and they look very similar to my chocolate bucks.

No difference in eyes, because this is chocolate based Fawn. The smut is chocolate. I am waiting for the agouti markings to make their appearance. They don't come in good in this group until close to jr prime.

I thought she was chocolate based. Would the agouti markings you're talking about appear on her or her kits? (I'm such a newb at all of this.) She is almost 11 months old now.

Fawn will have agouti marks. In my case, I have one kit that I can't tell if it's agouti or tort, but either way it's either a Chocolate Fawn or a Chocolate tort. I have had a really hard time seeing agouti markings, white around the eyes, inside of the ears, nose and belly, on my kits, but obvious on jrs. (No Dood I am sure they aren't Steels, LOL :D :D :D )

But we got a bit sidetracked talking about crazy Angora colors, sorry about the hijack. :hijacked:

__________ Sat Apr 18, 2015 4:21 pm __________

You have chin gene in there some where? Perhaps you will get a Pearl.
