I don't want a cat, but I so far I have seen three mice WALKING across my yard, one in the bunny barn. I am considering a vermin dog, perhaps a toy fox terrier. Anyone know any breeders in the mid west/atlantic east coast? I tried the shelter, and they want to examine all of my dogs, must be inside, and all kinds of reasonable hoops for me to jump through before I can adopt. Besides I'd rather get one I can show.

TFT's are adorable. I don't know how good they are as ratters though- they are rather tiny, and since rodents are primarily nocturnal and TFT's have such short coats I wonder if they would do well left outdoors at night.

If you can't find any, some other breeds to consider are Schipperkes, some Aussies, and of course Jack Russells. I've always liked Welsh and Airedale Terriers, and Borders and Norfolks are especially endearing!

I wish there were mini shepherds, these guys are just to big to follow mice under things. I do have a preference to something with short hair, shepherds have so much coat.
That's a thought about the night, but I've seen these things in broad daylight, walking through the yard or running in the barn when I open the door in the morning. It went right past the dog, and a smaller dog would have been able to get at it under the cages.
I am not a small dog person, I find them a bit annoying, so it has taken me a while to come to terms with this. Border/norfolk terriers always strike me as scruffy. But better a small dog than a cat.

Schipperkes are awesome little dogs and their coats are pretty harsh and easy to care for. They look a bit like sheperds. I got one from a rescue as a kennel mascot when I managed a boarding kennel. He was a bit over-sized, but he was a good ratter. I love my JRT, but he is a wuss when it is cold, and needs to wear a coat in low temps.

Have you visited the website for the American TFT club? They have a breeder referral that can maybe get you started. There also might be a local club close to where you live. http://www.atftc.com/

Yes, that and the AKC breeder referrals are the first places I look. There are two breeders in Ohio and only one has working info, and I have had no response to emails. I'd rather get a referral from someone, and if possible, I'd rather not leave Ohio.
