Any ideas on using this cage?

I want to use this cage for the rabbits, and am trying to decide which purpose would suit best. It is 7' long, 3' deep, and 4' high. I am going to add shelves to utilize the vertical space. There is plenty of room inside for us to climb in to play with the bunnies.

As I see it, my options are:

Exercise pen
Grow out pen
2 doe colony
Divide in two making 2 large cages for does with kits leaving the nest

What Queenpup and I really want to do is put Evil Blue and Mysterious in there (divided or together) so we can hopefully turn Evil Blue into Sweet Blue. However, both does are on day 28 as of today, and this will be their first kindling. I am worried a move might add too much stress to an already stressful event.

If I do divide the cage for use when kits begin to leave the nest, should I do so in a way to prevent the kits from mingling? My primary concern is aggression from a doe toward a kit that is not hers, keeping in mind that my rabbits are not colony raised.

Thoughts and suggestions eagerly awaited! :D

View of the wire; the door has 1/2"x 1" "floor wire", the rest is 1/2"x 3".

The cage is located in the yard that houses our small livestock. The chicken coop is on the left, cat coop behind that, cage on right end of cat coop, with the shelter for our pregnant mare behind. (Trash truck not to scale! )

Looking the other way: sheds, bunnybarn, cage near right.

In the twelve years we've lived here, we only recently had a raccoon come over the perimeter fence, and it did not make it into this yard. It won't be bothering us again, either. Our wacko "Greenie" neighbors (more about them another time!) put in a seep for the deer and other wildlife which must have attracted it. It is about 300 yards distant, and the only other water is a pond about 3/4 of a mile away.

It appears that the general consensus is a grow out pen- Flurry and her kits will be delighted! :p What a way to christen the new cage- with my little Astrex darlings! :D

I would use it as a growout cage. Put a second level of floor wire and a ramp leading to it. I would not move your does that are close to kindling. The closest I will move them is a week out.

I told QP yesterday that we couldn't move them, but we were considering moving 2 other does in there that could adjust to each other prior to kindling. Good to know about time frames for moving them, though, especially if I should ever buy or sell a bred doe. Feather was 2 weeks out when I bought her. Any idea regarding selling a doe with kits?

What size is the wire mesh? It would make an awesome grow-out cage as long as the kits cannot get out through the wire. It's amazing what they can squeeze through when motivated.

Where will it be situated? I am also a little concerned that predators like raccoons (do you have them up that high?) could reach in and grab a bun. Horrible things... they just pull their victim to the wire and chomp on it still alive through the wire.

Grow out, since the second level will help build their muscles and so will all that running/hopping space.

I would not take two does that have been caged separately and try to put them together in that cage. That is asking for trouble! I tried that with two that WERE together, then I separated and then after a bit, tried to put them back. OMG....rolling, fur flying, screaming ball o' rabbit! Huge fight....

I have 3 does that are 4 months and one week old that spend time together in the play yard all the time- if I tried it, it would have been with Flurry and "Gopher" or else the not-yet-born. But it's probably too small for that unless I get Tans or another small breed. Are there Mini-Satins?

If a breed doesn't exist--- create it!!!

Hah! Already working on that with the Astrex coats! Duman has ruined me...

I checked on the minis already :D thanks for enabling, though! Satin-ized Rex... hmmm... I'll have to research those now, too. :p
