They're just jealous of those gemstone peepers.

Yummy greens! I had asked about weaning the kits at 4 weeks but I think momma Cut Ear has taken the decision out of my hands. I haven't seen any suckling going on for quite some time now. I can't say for sure it never happens but I never have seen it. They are going though an amazing amount of pellets however plus all the hay I give them. I will be increasing the hay ration and cutting back on pellets but I sort of feel like at such a young age, 31 days, they should be allowed all they can eat.

You're right Joe.Free feed them for now. I usually do until they're 6 months old, (the ones I keep). Careful with too many greens at once though.
No danger there Homer, they only get such greens as we throw out of our own kitchen and that is not much at all. I wish I could give them more but they will have to settle for hay.

I moved the kits out into two cages to give them more room and give Cut Ear a rest. They are 5 1/2 weeks old. I had intended to separate them by sex but it ended up being 9 boys and one girl. Putting nine in one cage would defeat the purpose of giving them room to grow so I just made it 5 and 5. I figure they will all be in the freezer before sex becomes an issue.
My little black doe should kindle sometime this week and by the time her kits are weaned Snowball and his classmates will be "in the bag" so to speak.
I'll give Cut Ear another couple of weeks rest before breeding her. She has been such a good mom I don't want to burn her out but I kinda think she enjoys being mom.
Beginning tonight I will have a small electric heater running over night in the outhouse to give Blacky's newborn some heat. It has been single digits every morning for the past week. The forecast is for warmer temps but not a lot warmer. It seems the unusual cold will be giving way to the usual cold.

Glad things are working better this time around Joe.

Are you sure you don't want to keep the "one girl"? How old is Cut Ear?

I hear you about the cold. It's been crazy cold here. Your old stomping grounds have actually been about 30-40 degrees warmer than Pueblo. :x

I have no idea how old Cut ear might be but I get what you are saying, like it's a bloodline I might want to continue and that is true. I'll be watching them and see how things develop over the next month. None of the kits really look a lot like mom, I don't see those big proud ears on any of the kits.
Unless the little black doe proves exceptional I probably won't keep her after her kits are weaned and that would make room for another doe.

__________ Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:13 pm __________

Snowball and his classmates are 6 weeks old today. Out of curiosity I weighed two kits picked at random and got 2.7 pounds each. I'm thinking I may start butchering at 4 pounds but won't butcher all at once so some will get heavier. I sure wish those new Klubertanz drop pans would arrive, I need them like last week. I have a makeshift pan under one cage and one cage sitting empty for lack of a pan.

They can be "slow as molasses in January". I can just hear the excuses now with the Holiday season right around the corner. :x Call them up and build a fire under their butt or cancel the order.

You should call Kammalop. They carry everything Klubertanz does and are super nice people and ship next day in most cases. They will tell you while on the phone rather it's in stock or not if you ask. 877-244-5797

I can certainly confirm that! First they were behind, then they had to pull people for the Texas show, etc. Four cages ordered beginning of SEPTEMBER and shipped YESTERDAY! Almost 10 weeks for something I was told would be 4 weeks, 5 at most.

When I ordered I think I was given a delivery date but with the combination of my poor hearing and the woman's strong accent I'm not really sure what she said.
