I know Ive been asking a lot of breed questions but...
Does anyone raise Palominos or Champagne D'argents? I would like a calm preferebly sweet large rabbit. He (Id like a buck) would be used for. 4-H and as a pet. Thanks in advance guys. :)

__________ Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:53 pm __________

*bump*

I know there are some here to breed those, but I am not sure how close they would be to your location. I did start looking at the ARBA website to see if I could find any breeders in my area. I will try to get a link for you.

__________ Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:55 pm __________

The ARBA website is http://www.arba.net and the other one I have been using is http://rabbitbreeders.us/ I hope that these help you in your search.

Palominos are rather rare. I've never seen them before. There was someone breeding palo crosses.

There are a lot of champagne breeders around here and we had some from wisconsin for awhile. They are somewhat big for a child to handle but they are extremely laid back. I often wondered if they weren't sick or something because they'd just flop and not move even when you spilled water on them or covered them in hay filling the feeders. They just laid there wet or dirty half asleep. Drove me nuts. I was always checking them over to make sure they were ok. Despite that the bucks were still pretty good breeders. Not as forceful and energetic about it as my mini rex but they got the job done once they figured out what they were supposed to do. They did have slightly smaller litters for such a large breed. Only about 5 kits. Not a big deal if you are raising them to show though since you would only be breeding enough to have some juniors to show throughout the year. It was a bit of a downside to raising them for meat though. Although smaller litters grow faster on less food which can balance it out to a point. Some people throw new zealand or californian in the mix to up the litter size and mothering instincts which can cause improperly colored offspring or show table faults so you want to watch the pedigrees closely.

Okay thanks akane! I don't think Pals are of any interest to me now so its between Silver Fox, Mini Lop, and Champagnes. Thank you all for your time and info you guys here at RT have really helped me. :) By April I should be able to know what I should be looking for and be able to buy a good show rabbit. I'll post pics as soon as I get them.

I'll apologize in advance if you already told us and I missed it, but what state do you live in?

I'm not familiar with the breeds you are considering, but my Rex are pretty sweet rabbits, especially the bucks. I have heard that in some parts of the country they are on the temperamental side, so you do need to watch the lines.

Well if it's down between those three breeds, here is my 2 cents:
I've had 1 Champagne D'argent and few Champagne D'argent mixes. They were really sweet, gorgeous rabbits.
Haven't had any Silver Fox, so I can't help you much there.
MINI LOPS ARE TOTALLY AWESOME!! Love them. Definitely one of my favorite breeds. Great personalities, easy to raise, lot's of fun colors, and just the right size to double as meat or pet rabbits.

Okay kind of an irrelevant statement here but has anyone seen the lionhead picture on the ARBA breeds? Teyre officially proved now right? Or am I wrong?

__________ Tue Feb 04, 2014 10:46 am __________

Yup they are http://www.lionhead.us/
