Looks like she'll be expecting. LOL

What's the difference between opal and blue otter? Is there any visual difference?

Opal has tan ticking in the fur, and a tan ring when it's blown into. Cream and tan color on top of the feet. I think a blue otter's feet should be blue on top.

That makes it clear. Thanks!

She isn't too impressed with my camera. I have no idea why.. :?

Kit sorting day!!!
From my last two litters.

I think it's about day 7. Probably the very perfect day to sort the steels from steel-free agoutis.

Which I have 5 of. Yep 5!!! A record for me!!!!

3 lynx and 2 opal. (please be does, please be does, please be does)

7 that are going to to be visual steels:

Steels often have these faint agouti marks that get easier to spot with experience. Tops of hind feet:

Back of neck:
GEDC2597.JPG
Lighter belly color:
GEDC2605.JPG

There were also three kits with the appearance of self. Two lilac and one blue.

I can use the steels in this project since I know their genotypes is at least A_ and I can sort agouti from steel. I can REALLY use the agoutis, since I'd eventually like to see no steel at all in this line.

The "selfs" are not useful to me, since they may or may-not be masked steels.

Those are some beautiful bunnies you have there, Zass.

I love that chocolate doe. She looks bored out of her mind! Seems to be asking, "Are you done yet?"

The is the new guy. Moe I didn't name him

He had a nail injury and a mild case of ear mites. The breeder was shocked to find them, but thanks to RT, I was able to reassure her it was no big deal, easily treatable, and not her fault.
So he's greasy(mineral oil), and in the bathroom while he recuperates.

He's 50% SF , his dam was DOCILE  and RATIONAL and only throws blacks and chestnuts when bred to an agouti (who carried self). In other words, not a super steel.

She's probably the first authentic Silver Fox we've been able to find so far.

Surprise, surprise. She's unpedigreed.

Anyway, LOOK at that HUGE head!!! It's not really that oversized, it just looks that way from all the fluff!! Yeah, the camera angle helps, but it's pretty silly looking in real life too. ;) I forgot that increasing the foxiness would contribute to them looking like huge headed jelly beans.

Any way you can get your hands on her??

By friend having her is ALMOST the same as having her myself, BUT... I think she will be coming home with me soon. I need to get her bred to a fluffy lynx buck, for higher SF percentage chestnuts that carry both dilute and chocolate. Hopefully with nice, mellow personalities....

What did you mean by this Zass? I'm just curious as because I thought you had (or had had) several SF that you were using in your cross breeding program.

Thanks!

Yeah, I had pedigreed show stock SF from a few different lines (from far off states even). One had two GC's on her pedigree. Big lovely rabbits, but they had all been out-crossed at some point.

It's pretty clear the breeders were favoring wins over everything else.
The does were ALL psychotic, and they had genes they shouldn't have. Like chocolate and rew, and every single one was a genetic super steel. (Something breeders can't see unless they test breed with a rabbit of a different type, since SF only come in self)

I wanted the chocolate. But man...the breeders should have taken the time to correct the temperament if they outcrossed to satins to get the color.

Those "silver fox" also had smaller litters and were poor mothers. I couldn't get them tamed, the worst of them injured herself repeatedly because she would fly around in a panic whenever she saw me. The best of them was still just plain aggressive. That was the one I raised inside with Mucky. No amount of treats and petting ever helped calm them down.
It was like trying to cage wild rabbits.

Silver fox are supposed to be docile, good mothers and have large litters. I couldn't have been more disappointed. :(

I'm still struggling with does out of those lines being more high strung and nervous than I'd like.

Having the uber docile velveteen lops here at the same time was great for helping me figure out just how much of temperament is genetic.

Here's my Imp, the fluffy useless lynx runt.

He has a good temper, a good coat, and I don't hate his type, but man he's still so SMALL for his age.
He's showing that I am making progress here. But,
I can't keep an unnecessary buck around forever. I suppose he could be sold as a medium sized mix breed rabbit. No one is likely to mistake that as any breed.

I am LOVING those rabbits! They are beautiful! Hopefully that new fox doe you found will give you a leg up in your breeding program. :)

He really is a handsome guy:) Hope catches up on his growth for you....
You know, I kept telling myself I'm going to eat him, but I just can't seem to bring myself to.
I guess he gets to hang around and grow a bit larger while I decide what to do with him. ;)

I'm really liking this SF doe. Yesterday she came up to me at the cage door and allowed me to ruffle her coat. She stood for it and didn't move away. A good sign. :)

Some of my current litter. Mostly opal and lynx (and a couple steels).

The fluff-factor certainly seems to have been increased :D

I have a thing for the useless cute things.... seriously. There's a horse a friend is keeping that I am calling Elmer because he really should be glue. Worthless, useless pain in the tuckus... but he's pretty so we put up with him.
