She's probably the first authentic Silver Fox we've been able to find so far.
What did you mean by this Zass? I'm just curious as because I thought you had (or had had) several SF that you were using in your cross breeding program.
Thanks!
Yeah, I had pedigreed show stock SF from a few different lines (from far off states even). One had two GC's on her pedigree. Big lovely rabbits, but they had all been out-crossed at some point.
It's pretty clear the breeders were favoring wins over everything else.
The does were ALL psychotic, and they had genes they shouldn't have. Like chocolate and rew, and every single one was a genetic super steel. (Something breeders can't see unless they test breed with a rabbit of a different type, since SF only come in self)
I wanted the chocolate. But man...the breeders should have taken the time to correct the temperament if they outcrossed to satins to get the color.
Those "silver fox" also had smaller litters and were poor mothers. I couldn't get them tamed, the worst of them injured herself repeatedly because she would fly around in a panic whenever she saw me. The best of them was still just plain aggressive. That was the one I raised inside with Mucky. No amount of treats and petting ever helped calm them down.
It was like trying to cage wild rabbits.
Silver fox are supposed to be docile, good mothers and have large litters. I couldn't have been more disappointed.
I'm still struggling with does out of those lines being more high strung and nervous than I'd like.
Having the uber docile velveteen lops here at the same time was great for helping me figure out just how much of temperament is genetic.

Here's my Imp, the fluffy useless lynx runt.
He has a good temper, a good coat, and I don't hate his type, but man he's still so SMALL for his age.
He's showing that I am making progress here. But,
I can't keep an unnecessary buck around forever. I suppose he could be sold as a medium sized mix breed rabbit. No one is likely to mistake that as any breed.
