I bred a broken doe (about 80% color with white on face, neck legs and belly) to a solid male. I ended up with 3 solids, two marked like the doe and one with about 25% color sprinkled over her back, head, ears.

I plan to breed the doe to one of her sons and a doe kit to a brother. Is there a markings calculator somewhere or could you refer me to a thread that will help me figure out the patterns I will get?

Alternatively an explanation would be lovely.

Thank-you!

Nope :)

:explanation:
The colour modifiers that control whether a rabbit will be a heavily marked "booted broken" or a lightly marked "false charlie" are not well understood. Since booted are more rare I assume they are not as strong (sorta like recessive but not exactly) to the whitening modifiers.

Sounds like the dam is a booted and the solid sire carries the modifiers for lots of white but also for booted

If you prefer the booted broken look of your doe then breed to a similarly marked son, if you prefer a lighter marked rabbit then keep it and breed to a solid sibling as there is a 50% chance s/he got the white modifier instead of the booted but you won't know unless you test breed. If the whiter kit is a doe I'd breed her back to her father as you know he has the non-booted modifier somewhere in his DNA as well as for booted, and see what happens

This is assuming the minimally marked kit didn't get a Vienna gene that coupled with broken is making him/her a false charlie

Ain't genetics fun

Dood, I am always impressed with your grasp of genetics and I'd like to say thank you for all the work you do for us here on RT!!!! In addition, you teach us genetics in a way that is easy to learn and you don't seem to get frustrated explaining the same things over and over. Bless you!!

:thankyou:

Thank you both! This gives me a lot to go on come breeding time.

And for the record...Yes! Genetics is fun and fascinating!

If I posted pictures of the doe and her marked kits would this give you more information?

They are my meat crosses. Mom is a satin and dad had satin, flemish and NZ in him. He was fawn without odd white.

Would Vienna be a possibility? I am learning about color in chunks I haven't got to the Vienna/BEW chunk yet.

It is common in the small pet breeds and Beverens come in the colour. Often carriers of Vienna have odd white areas on their heads or feet, but not always - ever have any kits like that?

I doubt your meat mutts would have the gene but anything is possible
