    Pumpkins!

I brought my love of fall and the harvest season with me to southern Florida when my family moved here from the pumpkin and corn fields of northern Illinois. :autumn: That was 44 years ago! After saying I was going to try it for all these years, I finally got some pumpkin seeds to plant for...

    Checking in after another hiatus...

These are the discouraging months, raising rabbits in Florida. Too hot to breed... The buns are miserable from the heat... Yard work kicks in to high gear, and cleaning cages becomes a real chore. Meanwhile, the boat wants to be taken out. The other day, two dogs that I've never seen before...

    Tail Wagging?

Since I got my first rabbits, present company included, about 40 rabbits have passed through my herd. I have a doe right now who wags her tail excitedly when ever she's see's her food or a treat coming. I don't mean a little twitch. I'm talking about a full blow wag, like a crop-tailed Yorkie...

    Happy Easter Weekend!

Haven't been around much. I'v been busy. Just thought I'd share a few spring time pictures... Picked up some Leghorn pullets to add to the flock... A litter of month old, Florida White/Havana mutts chowing down with Mom... Grandma watches from next door... Do my ears make my ears...

    A Little Mexican, anyone?

I made this over the weekend after making some adjustments to a chicken recipe I found online. My wife grew up in Mexico and she turned me on to Pozole years ago. Pozole is a soup or stew made with hominy corn, that you add garnish ingredients to at the table, to suit your own taste. It's...

    Cage Envy!

Today, I downsized, and sold half of my small herd to a guy who started with rabbits a couple of years ago, shortly after I did. He's a friend of a friend and I know him vaguely. I delivered the buns because I have transport cages, and I got to see his rabbitry. Anyway, like me, he has ended up...

Are there meat differences in different domestic breeds?

Not growth rate, bone ratio, etc. but flavor, texture... those kind of things. I haven't eaten wild rabbit, but the meat I've seen is darker than cage raised. I assume that's because of activity level and maybe, diet. As far a domestic breeds go, is New Zealand meat any different from, say...

    I'm at a Crossroads

Hi, guys. I haven’t posted since last August. (I had to look it up.) Warning: This rambling post may end up making up for my silence with its length. It was a long, hot summer of just feeding and cage cleaning. I’m still turning the fans on occasionally, and it’s January! I...

    This is interesting...

Haven't posted in a while. Just riding out a long, hot, wet, South Florida summer. If all goes well, this fall we'll be breeding a few of the rabbits that were born to our original, purchased herd from last year. Kind of a milestone, I guess. Will that make me a "bunny grandpa"? :? Anyway...

Gonna have to free up a couple cages...

I assume my Havana doe is telling me, "I'm finished with these. Get em out of my cage!" ...She's starting to hump her 5-1/2 week old kits. :? That's OK. The others are ready for FC, and I have a big paella planned for company in a few weeks. ;)

Leading them to water and getting them to drink.

Dealing with multiple water bottles has gotten very tedious. Just one of those things you come to dread having to do every day. We're going away for a week next month and I'm going to ask my brother to take care of things while we're gone. (Rabbits, Chickens, Aquariums... the cat that won't...

    Ear Mites... My turn

Today was cage clean and nail trim day. When it was was SF bucks turn, I noticed the crunchies in one of his ears. I'd never seen it before and looked it up... Ear mites. :x Man! that's nasty! Did a quick internet search, saw mineral oil and decided it couldn't hurt. I flooded the...

For those to the north getting late season snow...

No nonsense. Just good flavor. I like to top it with crunched up tortilla chips. ;) Bunny & Bean Chili 1 lb. rabbit meat, coarse ground with 1/2 lb. uncured bacon 2 medium onions, chopped 1 green bell pepper, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 1 tbs. olive oil 2 – 10 oz...

    The "Real Me"...

I'm too old for selfies, but I was home before the mama, and she caught me on her cell phone. So, I thought I'd have a little fun with it....... Hey, a guy's got a right to wind down after a hard day!

"Imitation is the highest form of flattery"... I'm pretty sure your current avatar is older than mine. Sorry for being a copy cat. It wasn't intentional. :D

    Perfecty cooked rabbit kicker?

Sorry if this doesn't belong here. I considered "Meat Rabbits" and "Rabbit Recipes," couldn't make up my mind, and decided to post it here. I'm on a quest to achieve the perfectly cooked rabbit hind-quarter. I've gotten pretty good with chicken breasts over the years. I'm guessing that as far...

    Here comes summer.

Upper 80s in Southwest Florida, already. The buns are feeling it. This mama Silver Fox will be free of this litter in about a week. Meanwhile, we're sharing the ice bottles. The Havana doe in the back, left, and the Florida White buck above her, may be giving me one last litter in two weeks...

Thought I ought to change my signature logo...

    First day of Spring!

Happy Vernal Equinox from my Green Man! I spent the day working on a new chicken tractor, while the rabbits watched. :bunnyhop: Kinda cloudy, for the first day of Spring... :| Maybe Easter will be sunny. :)

    Heartland?

My wife and I are going to have serious withdraw problems when we run out of Heartland episodes to watch on Netflix! She watched about a season and a half without me. I sat through an episode or two, and she was happy to start over from the beginning so I could catch up. No serious violence...
