Just how 'genetic' is temperament?

We breed NZW and have found that attack bunnies aren't worth the effort unless we really, really need them. We have had a few that we tried to keep but they ultimately ended up in freezer camp.

When to breed back a doe with 1 kit?

I have lost does when the kits were 4 wks old and the kits do fine. If it was me, and she is in good shape, I would breed her back right away and keep the kit on her til I put the nest box in which for me is 28 days. Of course everyone is different. :)

That sound about right. Ours go in at about 5.75lbs and come back between 3 and 3.5lbs.

    Nest box eye in kits

We would get the odd kit with nest box eye, but it was very rare, we just used the polysporin eye and ear drops and it would go away. About a month ago we had a litter and over half of them had it. :o I went back and looked at all the litters that had this problem, I am one of these people...

    Our newest additions, pics.

We have about 40 rhode island reds and were looking for some new colour to add to our flock and our eggs. :) There are 19 all together, 17 ameraucanas (easter eggers), and 2 marans. We are looking at getting an incubator in the fall and putting it to use next spring.

    Mastitis?

 I was wondering if that might cross her mind. We were thinking of retiring Nikki (foster mom) but she has definitely earned another round. We are also very thankful that Patsy (mom on vacation) just decided to take some time off and it wasn't anything more serious. I wonder if this is...

    Mastitis?

That's good to know I always worry when they are so young.

__________ Thu Apr 05, 2012 5:56 pm __________

Just an update. Everybunny is doing fine, we removed the nest box and they all snuggle around their foster mother like nothing has happen. Foster mom seems quite...

housing question for doe and kits

PTJeff: Our does, that we wean at 6 wks, appear to be quite happy to have their own space again and our litters do just fine on their own at that point. Lowell: I think there are a variety of different weaning ages and opinions on the subject. I'm not sure that there is a right age or just...

    Nestbox eye...please help.

I also use an an antibiotic. I use polysporin eye and ear drops, the same one I use for the children. It seems to work and it doesn't seem to hurt them.

Holy potatoes, I've got a star?!

I didn't know what the stars meant until someone else mentioned it. Then I had to check one of my posts to see if I had one.:)

    Mastitis?

Thank you Maggie, I have never seen Mastitis but it didn't sound like anything I had read about. We have another doe that is a very experienced mother but her litter sizes have gone down considerably. On sunday she had a litter of 1 kit, I quess you can call that a litter, anyway I fostered...

    Mastitis?

We have a doe with a litter of 9, 3 week old kits. When I was doing my check I noticed, although it was pretty obvious since we have all NZW's that the kits were all over the doe trying to feed and 4 of her teats were bleeding. I immediately removed her. I gave her an hour and then checked...

    Pig info please

I have been watching kijiji but haven't seen any as of yet, will keep looking though. Thank you. I think we will probably go to Talbotville to the livestock auction, if not this Saturday then maybe next. We have electric fencing if we need it, but I'm hoping we will be able to manage without it.

    Pig info please

Thank you for the great info. Maggie I have bookmarked the forum, I'm sure I will need it. :) I am glad to see only positive responses. We will definitely be giving it a shot this year and see how it goes. Now I just have to figure out where to get them from. :?

    Pig info please

We are thinking of getting a few pigs to raise up this summer. We thought if we raised 3 we could sell 2 to pay for all the feed and to get ours butchered. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on the subject that they would like to share. We have both worked on pig farms when we were...

Thank you very much for the info, just for the record mine are all NZW. I'm guessing that size might make a difference. :)
