Disappointed in myself, need some encouragement/insight!

The first rabbit I did, I tried broomsticking him (took three tries) and then had a friend for support for the butchering. She fed me Manhattans all evening. :D I've gotten better; it's far easier now, and faster - but definitely be forgiving of your mistakes, because a) they're inevitable...

You know you raise meat rabbits when....

So true. I have many meat-eating colleagues who are horrified at my choices. Erm, hello? I really don't mind that they make their choices, but seriously - they're no longer 5 years old, they really need to know what the original purpose of that juicy steak was. Of course, I live in a fairly...

    Palpate

I palpate, but the only time I've had success was when the doe was a day or two away from kindling. :) Still working on it!

    New to me

:( I'm so sorry. I've heard of bucks fighting once they get to a certain age.

    We finally did it

:D I still thank my buns for nourishing me and my family. I'm still in the double digits - only processed 21 - but I have 26 that will be ready to eat in a month, and I'll be *quite* busy! As far as cooking: lapin a la moutarde looks really meh or even gross, but it is *so* good. From Saveur...

Might Be Getting The Hang Of This Meat Rabbit Thing

Yay! I have three litters that are all about 8 weeks old now - 26 to butcher! Oof! There are actually 27, but we're "babysitting" the parents and we'll keep a baby for breeding once the big 'uns go home. Good thing we have a chest freezer...

    Fodder sprouting systems, anyone?

I am new to this, and am a bit concerned about mold. Since I use city water, there's already bleach in there (sometime we can smell it :( - that's why we filter our drinking water) - does anyone have experience with whether that will effectively kill mold, or is it too low, or is the answer "try...

    Very pleased

I tried eating the kidneys, but I just can't stand them. :) I gave them to my chickens, but now I have a friend who nearly cried when I told him what I was doing - he's getting them now.

How do I explain to an anti-meat person???

Agreed. People who reach an opinion through logic can be reasoned out of it; people who reach an opinion through emotion can be emoted out of it. If there's a news story about a person killed by contaminated meat that was traced back to large feed lots, you might be able to reach these people...

Comment by 'JulieCunicole' in media 'spina bifida'

    It sure does look like spina bifida to me. <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> I'd see how it affects him, and consider giving this guy a gentle death. <!-- s:wr_crying: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/cz02.gif" alt=":wr_crying:"...

Chef Rogers Powell breaks down a rabbit for cooking

I use Opinel carbon steel knives for butchering, and I really, really like them. http://www.amazon.com/Opinel-Knives-Car ... rbon+steel Pros: *Very* sharp edge Pretty cheap Folds for storage Nice locking mechanism Different sizes for different size hands Cons: Loses its edge quickly Rusts...

Maximum age for kit separation by gender?

My American male "kits" start mounting everything in sight at 14 weeks or so. Now that I have a large freezer, I can finally dispatch them all in time!

38 days gestaton no babies yet

 I am dying to know! Did she kindle yet?!?!? The learning curve can be *so* traumatic. When I was a teen, my family had rabbits and we had *no* *clue,* and lost several litters. :(

Tails on the hide? Tan feet?

I always cut off the tails and give them to my cats or dog to play with. They looooooove it! :D

How long does the meat need to age?

This may not apply for you, as it takes alot of fridge space. After I process 3 or 4, I let them sit in salt water for a day or so. Then I take them out, rinse them off, and dry them pretty carefully. I place 2-3 (clean!) dishtowels in the bottom of a roasting pan, put the rabbits on top of...

    Processing Video.

Yet another "thank you," Grumpy. I'm a near-newbie (processed my 18th-21st rabbits last night!), and this answered alot of questions that I didn't even know to ask when I was first learning.

Using a Rabbit Wringer, Hopper Popper, etc

So true: I ordered mine in late July, 2013, and he told me it'd be available in September. In October I canceled my order, but never got the money back - and in December, finally got the stuff! They work well, and it's a great idea, but yes, the delay, the simplicity of this or the wooden...

    just some chicks

Buffs are *awesome* - they look like basketballs once they're grown. We have two adults, who are nearing the end of their egg-laying days. :( But at least we have eight pullets that will start laying in July/August (no Orpingtons; 2 Ameraucanas, a Wyandotte, 2 Buckeyes, a Cochin, and 2 that...
