    Removing clips

I use a pair of side cutter. I just place the jaws of the pliers along the slit of the clip and squeeze. The side cutters open the clip up as thy close and slid between the edges of the clip. I am not sure if that explains it well enough, but I find this a lit easier than using a screwdriver.

    Feeding costs - Ontario

Yes they give 2% off if paid in 10 days. That is another 42 cents off the price. This is not bulk. It is bagged in 25 kg bags. I buy there non-GMO chicken feed and it is great. Unfortunately they do not do a non-GMO rabbit pellet. I hope this post did not offend anyone. :?

    Feeding costs - Ontario

That is my thinking. If it is good enough for commercial breeders, then it is probably good enough for most people raising rabbits. If anyone in Ontario would like their contact information please let me know. Also, if there is anyone near the Innisfil area that would like to piggy back on an...

    Feeding costs - Ontario

It is not meant to be condescending. Unless you are an owner of Purina, then it was supposed to be. Why would anyone get offended by someone commenting that name brands are to expensive and that they are marketed towards pet owners? Because they are. Just like going to the grocery store...

    Feeding costs - Ontario

Name brands are way to expensive and for pet owners. This is from Jones Feed Mills. They make great chicken feed and their rabbit feed is used by a few very large growers.

    Feeding costs - Ontario

So I finally got my quote for feed costs. These costs are delivered to my door. I can combine my rabbit feed order with my chicken feed order so they will deliver it. Saves me the fuel and the drive to pick it up. I converted the pricing/weights for our American friends. 17% -$13.57/25kg or...

    winter breeding

To continue this line of questioning. Can you breed in winter if you house all of your rabbits outside or in an unheated outdoor building or coverall? What temperature is it safe to breed rabbits at? Is there a low and high range of temperatures that successful breeding could be done at?

    Price

Live rate around me is $12 for a 4 - 5 lb rabbit at the farm gate. I have seen them listed for up to $15 each on Kijiji. You have to look around your area and see what the are going for around you. I would think though that somewhere between $12 - $15 is reasonable.

    Buck to Doe ratio

I would like to thank everyone that replies. Even those that I do not agree with. A good discussion cannot be had unless there is a little lively debate. What is the thanks button for? Seems kinds impersonal. Is there a scoring system on this site?

    Profitability

A farmer down the road has 3 barns totaling 900 breeding does. Him and his brother work it. I have talked to him a lot. In Europe there are a lot of very large rabbit farms. There is money to be made, it just takes people that have drive to make it.

    Meat rabbit housing density

I was just using Michael's cage measurements, "in growout cages , combining litters of kits less then 12 weeks works fine, as long as you allow enough space for the grow-out rabbits, IMHO ,- grow-out rabbits need at very least, 30"x24" for each 8 rabbits less then 12 weeks [and at 12 weeks that...

    Profitability

I did ask for advice. Yes that is true. My only issue is that for some reason a few people think that raising rabbits is so hard that if you start out with more than 2 or 3 you are crazy and the sky will fall. Advice is not; You will not make money. You will never be successful. Only start...

    Profitability

The investment for 30 good production NZ meat rabbit is $450 - $600 tops. Cages $80 for 3 holes, including waterer and feeder. So that would be $800. Total Capital Investment of $1,400. That is not a lot of money to start a business. Then I buy food and wait. If something wrong happens I go...

    Profitability

I am about 30 minutes north of Toronto on the way to Cottage country. My road is the bypass for the the hwy so we get a lot of traffic by the house. Last weekend I sold 40 dozen eggs on Saturday and Sunday. Vaughan is just south of me. There are about 200,000 people of Italian decent living...

    Profitability

Yes I have raised rabbits as a kid. I read a lot and do my research. That is why I am on here. 30 does is a small start. Set up is pretty cheap. Cages are $20 per hole. Auto water system in $3 per hole. I have a bunch of markets. My last choice is the processor that will pay $1.60. That...

    Profitability

I am paying $14/50lb for chicken grower, so I am hoping the rabbit feed will come in around the same price. Large farms make money off of rabbits, why would it be impossible to copy them and make money to? Large volumes dictate lower feed prices and volumes of scale. I am just waiting for a...

    Profitability

I have a background in animal husbandry and an education in finance and animal sciences. I grew up on a factory pig farm. I have had every animal as a pet and currently do poultry and breed dogs. I am looking to get into rabbits as another income stream. I am working on expenses. I have my...

    Profitability

So I have been running numbers and trying to budget for the coming year. I have room for about 600 Does eventually but wanted to start out with 30 or so this year to learn and get things working. I was working on numbers and figured the following. 1 Doe = 6 kits per litter and 4 litters per...

    Buck to Doe ratio

I was hoping for 5. That would leave 20 does per buck. I could breed 5 does every day. and the bucks would still get at least every other day off and I should have all does covered.
