going from whole to ground - tips?

Quick update... Sausage making went well enough. I think for future rounds I'll try putting in some straight-up pork fat rather than just fatty ground pork - the final product was a little dense and could become dry if you aren't careful in cooking. I think we'll try another round or two...

going from whole to ground - tips?

Thanks all. I'm about 2/3 of the way through on my first trial batch. I ended up borrowing a buddy's Cabela's meat grinder (he is a big time hunter), and once I figured out how to assemble it, it made short work of the 4.25 pounds of meat I pulled off of two mature culls. I just deboned them by...

going from whole to ground - tips?

Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted, hope all are doing well! So my 3.5 year-old (human) has been doing the picky pre-schooler thing recently, and often refuses meat on the bone. But she has yet to meet a sausage she doesn't like! So I think I'm going to try making our own rabbit...

    American Rabbits (Blue and White)

I love my Americans! They are more "spirited" than many other breeds, but having actual personalities is a big plus in my book. I as well don't subscribe to the theory that crossing in black could possibly improve the blue color. Unless you account for how it is even easier to see scattered...

solutions for heat and pasture cages (like outdoor hutches?)

For the record, I went with adding chunks of tile flooring (actually, I think it's travertine, according to my husband the geologist) and making sure to have additional shade on the sides/fronts (for when sun angles got low). Everybody was stressed but fine. When the high temp finally dropped to...

solutions for heat and pasture cages (like outdoor hutches?)

Hi everyone. Like most of the west, we're staring down the barrel of yet another extended heat wave. This time we might reach over 105 in Reno, NV, which is high desert that usually doesn't get quite that hot (100, yes, but 105???)! Note that this is indeed a dry heat, humidity usually well...

    Rabbit tractor

Our tractors are roughly 4' by 4', typically divided into 2 holes. I'll put a max of 4 grow-outs a side, for up to 8 rabbits in one. That gets heavy! And I move them every morning. We have predators around, so we use heavy-duty wire mesh with 1/2" spacing on the sides. Nasty little raccoon...

Any way to tell if a buck is sterile?

For the OP, has your buck gained some weight? I find that if a buck manages to get a little extra fluffy, often his mojo disappears. Keep 'em lean and mean for best results. In my experience, heat sterility is manifested by zero litters or unusually small ones. It seems like the youngest bucks...

    Rabbit tractor

We tractor our growouts and breeding bucks, are on our 4th year now with no issues - other than a brief time spell when very young kits were dying. We never figured that out, it ended after a few weeks. Anyway, the rabbits' health is great, we butcher frequently and the livers all look good...

ISO Rex, to end up in northern Nevada

Hi folks! I want to expand to working with Rex, having just picked up a seal (most likely self chin, actually) Rex doe and deciding that she's awesome! Would anyone on here have sables, true seals, Californian, or whites from selfs or shaded lines for sale, and in a way that they could end up...

any pitfalls in breeding shaded Rex?

Thanks, Dood. I also thought her color looks pretty "warm," and therefore a dark sepia, not black. But I know firsthand from my American blues just how rusty the old sun-faded fur can get. They are certainly NOT dark lilacs or cchl carriers. I read somewhere, and of course can't find it...

any pitfalls in breeding shaded Rex?

Ok, I got some pictures today of "Mudslide" (her given name, not mine) in full sun. She's in heavy molt like everything else. Clearly has lovely brown eyes. Any thoughts?

any pitfalls in breeding shaded Rex?

I'm really suspecting I have a cchdc on my hands. She is in Global Pedigree so I could go deeper than the printed pedigree, and found lots of "black" to whites resulting in seals just upstream. I'm so glad that I talked to you lot here - now I know to concentrate on getting a nice true sable...

any pitfalls in breeding shaded Rex?

I'll try to get a pic of her today. Here are the colors in her pedigree: GGSire - Black Seal(?) GSire - Seal GGDam - White Sire - Chin GDam - Chin GGSire - Chin GG Dam - Black...

any pitfalls in breeding shaded Rex?

Hi, everyone! I've been busy being a new mom, haven't had nearly as much time for good ol' Rabbit Talk like I used to. But I still have plenty of rabbits, my Americans continue to be the workhorses of the barn, and I'm trying to find good homes for my last two Champagnes. But since having one...

    Rabbit skin blanket

So you actually tanned the hides instead of just drying them? Do please write up a more detailed post about the process. I look at the Primitive Ways website about that process regularly, but have been too chicken to try it. And I think a lot of my really sub-prime junior pelts would be best...

    ideas for dream rabbit barn?

Thanks, Marinea! Yes, having to balance the extreme heat of Nevada summers with the months of freezing nights during Nevada fall, winter, and spring is making planning difficult. I wish we only had to worry about one or the other. At least with the low humidity, misters work very well. I have...

    ideas for dream rabbit barn?

Hi folks! I've been AWOL a while - had our first (human) baby a few months ago and it's true what they say about how much time these little things take! Anyway, we scaled back to core rabbit numbers for a while, and now that we feel it's time to start re-building the herd, my husband agrees...

    Pictures of Rabbit Tractors Pls

This is our third year of running these tractors, and I think I like this design (the third one so far) as pretty much our permanent design. Some day I'll get around to writing up a nicely detailed description of the construction process. Basics are that we have gone as lightweight as possible...
