This one has me baffled and almost out of rabbits

Mum has been fighting this fight since the 60s, I have been fighting it most of my life, nothing we do has made any difference so now it is time, in the words of Monty Python, to "Run AWAY!" Finding anywhere to run to is not the easiest thing and during a pandemic, it is even harder. If and...

This one has me baffled and almost out of rabbits

 Great minds! :D We looked at the map and found a few places with no arable farming at all and are now waiting to hear back about a rental on the Isle of Coll. Fingers crossed we get it!

This one has me baffled and almost out of rabbits

I think it is agricultural drift off the surrounding fields that has done it but I can't prove it which is how "they" get away with it. As the murder doe was culled instead of dropping dead I fried up her liver, heart, and kidneys today to have on toast and while they looked perfect they tasted...

This one has me baffled and almost out of rabbits

Lost the first litter to a doe killing them at 4 weeks of age. One bite, through the heads and she then piled them up. Culled her and no signs of anything really wrong, just some hive-like thickened spots on the flesh side of the hide, colored red/purple. Her fur looked rain spotted, fur just...

    Raw Fleeces, now what?

I found I could wash it on the wool cycle and it worked a treat. Who knew, eh? <br /><br /> __________ Sat May 16, 2020 6:10 pm __________ <br /><br /> I do have to double wash white, once in the machine, then card, then wash in the sink gently with hot water and then card again once dry...

    Are electric pressure canners good?

Bit by bit I am replacing all the things we left behind to start our new live here and have been looking at a pressure canner and saw that electric ones are only about a tenner more than the stove top ones. Are they any good? Any easier? Safer?

First time kindling, doe bled out

Got some good news at least, found the source of dead rabbits on our allotment so know for sure I didn't kill them with contaminated grass. The vermin controller shot them, despite not being able to get in to collect the bodies. I know they do damage but really  at the waste. So now we...

First time kindling, doe bled out

Thank you!!! I tried a tip trap in Florida and it just did not work, they were very clever and nimble  but I will try the can on a dowel, just need to find a bigger bucket. Have also bought extra hot chocolate mix and ordered plaster of paris and small plastic sandwich bags. The insane...

First time kindling, doe bled out

No, her face was clean so I think it was from kindling. A worry though. Thank you for letting me know you have had it happen, not nice for you but a relief to know it does happen sometimes. Alice had not fed the kits by this morning so I held her for them. She is in with her own - well, I say...

    WHY!!!

Yay, good news indeed! With rabbits you can have a string of bad luck lasting for years but on the upside, you can have an equal string of GOOD luck lasting for years as well. Still stuck on bad luck here so glad yours has changed for the better. :D

First time kindling, doe bled out

She had a beautiful litter, was lively enough that day, was off her feed the next day, is dead now in a pool of blood. Question, is that not unheard of for a first time doe? Never had one go that way myself but many others have had rabbits longer than me. Biggest fear is RHD1 or 2 but if she...

    Keeping both meat and pets?

It is easy enough to keep pets and livestock separate in my head but everyone is different. Having several does in production with lots of fryers eating their heads off with more kits on the way and not enough cages for everyone, that tends to make it much easier.

Have you ever had a buck....

Rabbit and onions is the plan, or rabbit and dumplings. Hmmmmm stew perhaps? It was such a shocking murder, one neat bite deep into the brain, that I just will not let it happen again and goddess above, what if she passed it on? No, best to cut our losses and cull them both. Will see...

Have you ever had a buck....

It does feel like the Rex jinx is still going. Ah well, keep on keeping on, I guess. She is for the chop and we will see how the fluffy butt gang get on. I am seriously not holding my breath though, have had so many years of bad luck now with rabbits.

Have you ever had a buck....

It wasn't the buck, it was the doe. They are all dead. I simply do not have words to express how gutted I feel.

Have you ever had a buck....

Bite a 5 week old kit, splitting its skull open? Sitting up late last night I heard one of the kits screaming so rushed out with a flashlight, only to find one of them on the floor, dead. When I looked it over it had one, surgical, bite to the head and no other wounds. Entry through the base...
