    Rabbit Names

For awhile, they were named by a 'name theme' each year. The flower year, the spice year, the Roman year, the Qualities of Light year, etc. Now, we're naming annually in alphabetical order. Eventually, they will be sorted in the database by age since it sorts their names alphabetically...

    Keeping does fresh

Around here, if a doe was bred young and successfully had a litter, when she's rebred later, she's much more likely to conceive and successfully have a litter. If she isn't bred for a year or more, she may have more trouble conceiving, although if she does have a litter, she usually will...

Interested in building a pully system for rabbit cages, has anyone done this?

If you've got a skid steer, just put the cages on a big rack and move that with the skid steer as one big item. Or look into block and tackle, that'll move heavier loads. Or a chainfall and a rail system like used in warehouses. What about hydraulics?

    Question For The Experts

IMHO, a virus to kill off a species is a bad idea. As we all have recently learned, it's pretty hard to contain a virus just to one spot. But, hopefully they have a better idea of what it will do since they know a whole lot more about it than I do. As for bringing in any religious mythos...

    Personal Introduction

Snack sounds like a happy rabbit. Are you sure he's a cottontail? I've heard that cottontails aren't interfertile with domestic rabbits. Something about a different number of chromosomes or some such. Could Snack be a feral domestic rabbit, do you think? You could try having the rabbit kids...

Time needed between butchering and cooking?

We generally put them in salt water in the refrigerator at least overnight, but that's just us. Small kid time my grandma would get a chicken immediately onto the table, but she also put them in salted water overnight when they weren't immediately eaten.

    Biting clothes, pls help!

If it were a bun around here, there'd be a thump on the nose for biting behaviors of any type. Not a hard hurt kinda thump, just a 'wake up and pay attention' kinda thump. I don't think they can see directly in front of their nose, they always seem shocked to have the nose touched.

    Biggest size of successful litter

English angoras here, the biggest litter has been twelve and she kept them all. She was fed a lot and higher nutrition stuff such as grain was added to her diet so she could care for them all.

Have you ever been sold the wrong rabbit?

Mistakes happen and it's easier than one would expect to mistake genders in young rabbits. Still, if it's me buying a rabbit, I'm gonna check the gender myself and not take anyone else's word on it. Then if it's wrong, I can blame myself as well.

I need to get my rabbit out of the house

We've had rabbits with runny noses which cleared up after feeding them oatmeal. Plain old 'Quaker' oats. One entire feeding of mostly oats and then about half oats and regular feed and then down to about 25% oats for a few days. Cleared up the sniffles, although I don't know if it was...

    Weaning tips?

We've always let the doe do the weaning. When the kits are old enough she just quits feeding them. They'll usually be eating the same food she is for a few days before they stop feeding on mum bun.

    Angora breeds & their fiber

Some of the pet folks try to take their bunny to a groomer for clipping, they may not actually know much about the coat. They're also usually the ones who are 'rehoming' their 'precious' bun since it was too expensive to keep sending it to a groomer. FWIW, I rarely sell an angora to a 'pet'...

    Is this a Vienna marking?

Vienna is an instant DQ in English angora so it's not considered desirable. FWIW, you can show the BEWs but not anything with any Vienna marks. There's very little Otter in English angoras, so most likely it's just that your doe's nose is white on the inside. I'd guess it isn't Vienna, that...

What do I feed my bunny other than rabbit pellets?

I've made a map of the different bunny safe plants in my yard so I can always have something to feed the bunnies in case the feedstore is out of feed. Which happens more frequently than I'd like but at least they can be fed grasses, leaves and other green plants. I've also planted things for...

*BLOOD* Rabbits with bleeding toes *BLOOD*

I'd once considered several lines of barbed wire across the bottom of the bunny hutch if there were loose dogs around, but fenced the bunny yard instead. We've had bunnies that healed up from an entire lost foot when a mongoose got to some babies through the wires. Triple antibiotic and some...

Are chickens easier and cheaper than rabbits?

This thread was started in January of 2021, so it's been awhile! Well, around here the rabbits lasted longer than the chickens. The free range chickens eventually all got picked off by the neighbor's dog. Those were good chickens, they laid eggs in an open hole of the rabbit hutch so we had...

    Healthy litter!

Yay, Peach! IF she's kept them for a week, then odds are she'll keep them. Pictures?

5 deaths in the last 3 months (rabbits fed from greengrocer)

I can't really think of anything at a green grocer that would be a good diet mainstay for a bun. Maybe carrot tops, but that's not a complete diet. Most root veggies have too much sugar and not enough fiber to be a good base for a bunny diet. Lettuces, cabbages, etc., those aren't really good...

I Need Fair Theme Deco Ideas For The Rabbit Barn

Dress up the bunnies in cow suits? Give up on the 'moo' part and go for the 'memories' part, although that's still difficult to work with. Whoever thought up that theme obviously wasn't gonna have to decorate, I'd guess.

No Pellet Diet for 1 Month

If you have a small gene pool, there's a pedigree program called 'Kintracks' which can tell you how inbred any two animals are. It's not a very expensive program since it's less than $20 Australian dollars. The herd here started with six bunnies in 2009 and we're still down at less than 25%...
