I have my first ever litter of Beveren! I am so excited!
Cedar had ten, count 'em, TEN popples! One was DOA- or shortly after- it was very squished, and still had the membrane from its sac on it's little feet. It looked a little stretched, but not anything close to the pics of dwarf kits... so I think it was the first born and either had a hard birth or just got squashed while she delivered the rest.
I am happy with my nine little Bevs though, and can't wait to see them grow up.
Cedar was none too pleased with me this morning when I checked the nest, but she has been quite grumbly during her pregnancy. She is very talkative anyway- I don't think she was handled much before I got her, and she still has her doubts about me. I was a little afraid to reach into the cage, so I gathered a goodly amount of Shepherd's Purse and parsley for her to stave off fangs and claws.
Her nest had mostly straw in it, so she didn't make a very good hollow, but she pulled a boatload of fur! I fixed the nest for her after removing the kits, and will post about that in another thread.
The kits also seem to have inherited her loquaciousness... they kept saying "Uh-uh, uh-uh!" when I took them out. I guess Cedar must have already told them to watch out for the "two-legged ones". Hopefully I will be able to win them over.
Alright, I know you are all thinking "We don't need this epic rambling! Show us the bunnehs, for goodness sake!"
I'm feeling a little contrary today though, so first, here is Cedar and her pile of greens:
Notice her wary stance, and irritated expression!
...and Cedar and the proud Papa trying to get a peek at his progeny:
(Please excuse the condition of her water bowl- she had had about enough of me messing around in her cage.)
...and the nestbox I made for her (out of a very old and decrepit tote that has been very sun damaged) because she didn't like the hooded metal one:
Ready to kill me yet?
Okay... here are the bee-yoo-tee-ous bunnehs:
They still had a bit of dried blood on them, and I am hoping she will clean them up when she feeds this evening. If not, I will gather more greens to bribe her with and give them a quick cleaning myself.
