My first butchering experiance! pic warning

Yay I'm so happy! I know you guys know I got 4 rabbits last night, and thismorning after my doctors appointment I got some ingredients then came home and butchered (like that guys video with the rabbit hanging) That video helped soo much! best video evar!

Anyways I did the buck first and he was the oldest and had such thick hide. he was a little hard to do but after i did him the other 3 were so much easier then I thought.

I just though I'd show you the buns. I also thanked them and the lord for everything. I also wanted to know what their colors are I think Castor, Broken Black, Booted Black and Tort, but I'm not 100% sure with the one I think is tort like. Does anyone here know her color?

Also the broken was my favorite. And I didnt want to do it, luckily she kept kicking and thrashing (unlike last night) which kinda irritated me so i thought it was meant to be.

So the 3 does are off to freezer camp and the buck is in the slowcooker with some spices

I cant wait to try rabbit for the first time tonight!

I think the tort is just a sunburned black rabbit. You got all the other colors right.

It looks like you did very well- you even got bleeding from the ears and nose! I don't know what we are doing wrong- we processed 10 rabbits yesterday, and not one of them bled. They all died quickly, but not one drop of blood! I had to cut all of their heads off.

All of our rabbits are in the freezer- we need a little time lapse between Freezer Camp Day and eating them!

Thanks! I wasnt sure and the closest thing i could find on the internet was tort like. I'm not sure why but the sunburned black doe didnt really bleed maybe it depends. but i gotta go back downstairs and remove her mamary glands because there is milk. ehh

They're supposed to bleed after you dispatch them? The rabbits OAF and I processed last Saturday didn't bleed at all until we slit their throats. Even then, there was a lot less blood than I expected.

Trinity, you guys used the wringer, though, didn't you? I don't think cervical dislocation makes them bleed like that. bowbuild's video shows how to hang them upside down and bonk them on the back of the head, and they bleed from the ears, nose, and mouth.

Shelbers , you should travel around the country teachings the newbies how to slaughter their rabbits, or maybe you can do it for a percentage for people, your a natural,,,,an how did that rabbit you cooked turn out? Did you save the hides for tanning?

lol thanks! I had confidence because 2 semesters ago in biology when we skinned fetal pigs, i was the only one (in all my proffessors years of teaching) her words not mine, that ever skinned the fetal pig like a pelt. she was so proud of me she wished she woulda given me the spotted one haha

Also it wouls be nice to teach. I mean I am a beginner, but i wouldnt mind personally showing how to do it. It was fairly simple. I did it just the way the guy did it in the video (that hangs his after he shoots)

I definately saved the hides! I will use that old style battery acid thing when i get to it, but i washed them, squeezed out excess waters, cut them and folded themm lengthwise and rolled with the fur, put all 4 in a gallon freezer bag and then smooshed all the air out. I can take a pic of them in the freezer bag but not till I get to my parents house lol

Also the buck was great! I slow cooked him in 2 cups water, 1 cup ketchup, 1 tbs mild chilli powder, 2 tbs minced garlic, 1 tbs onion powder, 4 tbs brown sugar, 4 tbs apple cider vinigar, 4 tbs wershtishire sauce (sp?) and a tsp of tabasco. had him in the slowcooker first, bioled the ingredients in a pot for a min or so, then poared it over him, slow cooked high for an hour then on low for like 4 more hours. Served him with rice and corn ^^

Yes, we did. That makes sense! I think I really like the wringer. Seems much easier to get it right every time, without stressing out the rabbit, and a lot cleaner.

Oh but also I cut the carcass in half and removed the legs so he'd be in bits. Meat falls right off the bone but watch out for small bits of bone. Biting down on those hurts lol I just need to work on my preparation skills

I think there are some videos on youtube showing how to debone a rabbit. Nothing wrong with being able to kill your own food. It wasnt to far back in history where most people had to kill thier own food.
