I can't believe we are having such bad luck. Sometimes we'll lose a kit, but two complete litters...7 kits...in three days is tough. :(

Because our summers are too hot we breed in the fall-winter-spring. We just don't have that much problem breeding when it's cold, but everything just seems to be going wrong right now. A few days ago, our first doe had a litter of 3 and were covered pretty good under the fur (although I later saw that there wasn't much hay around them). Her cage is at the south side of the house next to a cedar fence. I had something up to protect them but we had an unusual cold south wind come up that day. When we found them they were cold but I brought them in and held them (up to the neck) in warm water, massaged them and put them on a heating pad. One showed some signs of life...moved a little and took a few breaths...and then nothing after that.

Today we had another doe kindle 4. Her cage was protected and had plenty of hay, but she didn't cover them well enough with hair. Again, we repeated the process and I actually got one to start moving around and breathing. I left him on the heating pad, breathing, but movement had diminished. Ten minutes later he was gone. :(

I am soooo bummed! We were breeding for Nationals in April and now we'll only have a few juniors to show. I hate losing kits, much less whole litters! Thanks for listening.

:( I'm so sorry to hear about that, I can't imagine how hard it would be to lose 2 entire litters.

I hope your next litters arrive happy, healthy and well covered!

it is indeed frustrating at times. My biggest dislike of winter breeding is when kits get dragged from the box once they are well started... it's like ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

may all go well with your next litters.

Thanks everyone. We'll re-breed in a week and try again, though they'll be too young to take to Kentucky. I'm almost tempted to bring the doe inside to kindle next time.

Ladysown, I know what you mean about losing kits that way! We had Californians when we first started with rabbits and we lost a 2wk old because he didn't let go of Mom when she left the nestbox. Now, for the first couple of weeks after a litter is born I try to go out before bed and check to make sure all kits are in the box...not foolproof, but I've been able to save a few by doing that!

What breeds do you raise? What are you using for bedding in your nestboxes? Sorry you are going thru this...It can be really frustrating to lose whole litters like this...

Well, we usually use hay and sometimes shavings for a base. Of course, the doe will usually tear up anything we put in there, but basically a lot of hay and she contributes the hair. Some does make better nests than others and sometimes the same doe will vary in how she makes her nest.

I've heard that straw makes a better insulator but I haven't tried using it. We use wooden boxes. Some have wire bottoms and some are solid. We'll put a layer of cardboard down over the wire botttomed ones.

There's only so much you can do if the doe doesn't cover the kits well, but if anyone has suggestions on different materials, I'm open!

Oh, we raise Tans and Polish.
