Please do not post links to rabbit breeder listings, I've already checked 3 different sites. Read the thread and you'll find most places already told me no papered animals. And that's something I'm not longer going to skip, too many people with mutts that sell them as pure.

sky,,,,,the words "meat rabbits" seem to have more than one meaning,,,,,,,and most people that show a meat rabbit breed ,are not raising rabbits for meat,, they are indeed just raising show rabbits, selling them at show rabbit prices.,,,,,,Its very confusing .

Grumpy raises meat rabbits , buying them and selling them at meat rabbit prices , for the purpose of raising meat rabbits.

there seems to be a big difference in that and show breeders that raise "meat rabbits",,,,,and i think the whole show system seems to have lost track of what meat rabbits are.

one way you can tell the difference is ,,meat producers breed year round,, show producers breed at the time needed to get "meat pen" bunnys for a show. At least ,this is what im coming up with from what ive seen.

also show producers dont seem to be quite as concerned with litter size.

__________ Sat Jun 23, 2012 7:05 am __________

meat producers dont seem to be as concerned with pedigree papers

I'd like to know who you've been talking to, litter size is of utmost importance to most show breeders. When you only get 1-2 showable animals, you need the biggest litter you can get. It's not a producer if it doesn't produce. It's not SOP if it's a scrawny little thing. Perhaps you've been with show people who don't really do much winning. I have nice sized Rexes, but when I went to the Lisbon show, those Rexes were as big as NZ's. I went home and immediately started culling and looking for new stock. Most of us who cull here feed or eat out animals. The 12 week old Rexes I bought are much bigger than my 16 week old. Find someone who is really winning, you will get big meaty rabbits. Rex don't do meat pen, and I show all year around, so I breed all year around. I have a fast breed back and I don't medicate.I don't have an air conditioned barn. I buy cheap food. I don't supplement. Any bunny here either thrives or dies.

Or maybe it's just Ohio and the NE region has some butt kicking rabbits. I hear it's that way with dogs too, we kick but here. I saw some NZ's that would put a turkey to shame at the last show.

SF in VA is hard to find. There aren't a lot of breeders here.

I'm actually finding a lot of SF in VA all of a sudden, I'm thinking crappy SF are starting to flood the market.

This would be the time of year for that. I am surprised that I am not finding more rabbits on CL by now.
