We are just starting out in Lilacs. Pick up our first one on the 15th (a buck) and then a doe in August. The buck will be 11 weeks when we pick him up and the doe would be 8 wks. Yes she's not born yet, but their were no available does at this time so we're hoping the next litter will have one without DQ's. We're getting them for my oldest to do 4H with. He'll show them and hopefully if they do well we'll breed them. Add in another doe as time goes on.

Anyway it's a pretty rare breed so I was just hoping that folks would post a pic or two so I can look at some eye candy while we wait for ours to arrive.

Thanks,

Beth

Congrats on your new Lilacs!

I don't have any but I think they are a great breed. I heard they have awesome temperments and they are so pretty! Can't wait to see pictures of yours!

I have lilac colored Rex! :p

But no Lilacs. :)

:welcomewagon:

There is plenty to read and learn here while waiting for your bunnehs.

Welcome to RabbitTalk, LilacGal!

I'm super psyched!! To the point where my husband (smart man that he is) asked if these were my buns or our sons. I told him that THESE were his, with the open implication that there were more headed this way.

Welcome!!! :)

Lilacs seem very cool, though I've never seen them in person. I'm confused though, are they all Lilac COLORED or do they allow other colors, too?

Just Lilac, there are no other colors, or they really couldn't be called Lilac right? :D Although there are a couple members of the club who are working on a broken Lilac variety.

Lilacgal are you a member of the Lilac club yet? nlrca.webs.com/ It's only $10 for a three year membership so it's one of the cheapest national specialty clubs there is to join up. Also, if you are looking for some Lilac pictures, join up on the private Lilac Rabbit Club facebook group as well.

I raised Lilacs as a kid, and when we got back into them, my kids already had Flemish Giant, Silver Fox and Mini Rex, so I said the Lilacs would be mine. I haven't been to a show yet where I was the one who got to show them :p

I'm joining just as soon as I fix my printer so I can print out the member reg form. Family reg of course. If I can't get the printer fixed by next Monday I'll go to the library and print them out for mailing. I saw they had a broken version that is being worked on, I think we'll get used to form and coat on the "easy" ones first. My son likes them all but we figured a medium sized single color reputable docile breed would be best to start with. The fact that it is a heritage breed being a huge plus for my hubby and me. If he likes it and does well with them we'll let him pick a second breed that is a tad harder. My husband just wants them to be large enough to eat should they fail as show or pets.
I'm also trying to become a member on the FB group but they haven't added me yet.<br /><br />__________ Wed May 29, 2013 10:24 pm __________<br /><br />Oh and yes they are all lilac colored or soon broken lilac colored.

No worries on that, they haven't added me yet either and I'm already a lilac member :D Facebook groups are incredibly backward when compared to a normal message board and it sucks that many clubs do most of their business on their private facebook group instead of their own website.

If the brokens take off, it's still a very long road ahead of them until they are an accepted variety. The club membership might not even vote to allow it to get to the CoD process. Even if they do that it will be five or six years until it has a real chance of being accepted.

I thought they already had a COD out on the broken? Doesn't really matter as a straight lilac is still a very pretty bunny. And sad to say but I find the other colors to be confusing. Not self white, black and red, but the rest are all to close to one another. Like smoked pearl and opal? I'm sure with time I'd get it but, way too many choices to begin with.

No not yet. They brought some brokens to the Nationals show at Louisville to show and for comments and questions so that the membership could see them for the first time.

The two on the left are the broken lilacs, the right two are broken blues from havanas to show the contrast in color.

I've got a nice French one in the front yard..... oh... you mean rabbits

I've got some rabbits that are "lilac" colored, but I call them "opal".

I don't have any Lilacs :( I love the breed though! Just too small for me sadly..but my friend is trying to get into raising Lilacs and she is looking for a buck so yeah lol.

They don't yet. This is just preliminary. Just gauging interest with the club. There were quite a few heated conversations about it on the facebook group.

They are smaller then a Cali or a NZ but they should still make a decent meal if they don't make the grade for show or pet. One step at a time though. Got to get him first and show him to see if he's worth making more of him. At least that's how it works with dogs...

Welcome LilacGal! I have Lilac Rex and they are by FAR my favorite color. This last litter I got my first ever Broken Lilac. He is a keeper for sure!

Such a cutie!! We're doing Homeschool with Jay so 4H is a good complimentary program for him. He's excited, I'm excited, hubby is pretty happy with the idea as well. He didn't do animals like I did growing up but he's looking forward to rabbit stew. ;) He knows how to do the butchering for them he's just never raised them. We had meat mutts, mostly NZ crosses, when I was growing up.
