Oh man, it's been a long rough road since Thurs. morning last week. My daughter somehow, somewhere contracted an E-Coli infection. She's been in the hospital since Saturday, we are hoping we'll get to go home tomorrow as things are looking good. She is past the critical period when complications w/kidney's occur. Poor girl, she's only 7 and has just been through hell the last few days.
We've had tons of support from friends and family and so many prayers....we have felt peace and comfort through most of this time and Rhetta continues to improve everyday--yay!
Just needed to process, thanks!

How terrible! I can't imagine how worried you must have been. Poor little girl. :(

I'm so glad she is doing better. ((Hugs)) to her and your family.

I hope you can isolate the cause. Had she been playing in any puddles or slow moving water?

I had a Great Dane that nearly died from E. Coli. He ran off with another one of our dogs (the instigator was promptly rehomed!) and contracted it by drinking from a stream frequented by cattle, who of course are not picky about pooping near their water source.

I feel for you.

when my daughter was 11 she got salmonella and had to be medivaced from Alaska to Seattle. Over a week in ICU.

It's so scary when our kids are sick! Prayers sent for you and your kiddo.

I hope she's starting to feel better, poor thing. The symptoms of E. coli aren't kind to anyone, but small children are particularly vulnerable, because they're...well...small and can dehydrate so easily. Is your doctor aware? What has s/he recommended? I think doctors have a reporting system to help detect clusters of outbreaks and track down sources.

But if your daughter's case is an isolated one, here are a couple of off-beat possibilities, based on what my doctor and I went through tracking down my own case of giardia in January 1996:

--walking on unpaved trails in parks?
--family camping during the rain?
--simply being outdoors during the rain?

What these scenarios have in common is that one's hands can become contaminated without the person knowing. Then, the person wipes his/her face to get sweat/rain out of the eyes, and BINGO! Contamination; the pathogen has succeeded in achieving entry, probably via the eyelids' mucous membranes. Eventually, I even purchased Pedialyte for myself. Now that I have RT's handy-dandy recipe for electrolyte solution, I won't need to do that ever again. :) Dehydration is a high risk with enteric diseases; even if someone doesn't want to eat (understandable!), drinking electrolytically helpful solutions will stave off dehydration.

While the more normal mode of entry for E. coli is contaminated food, it doesn't have to be; there are more "creative" ways this pathogen can invade our bodies. :(

Well, we aren't quite out of the woods yet....looks like we'll have to stay another nite...her urine output has been very low even though she's getting iv fluids. The main concern is kidney problems associated w/E-Coli. This is Day 7 and she still hasn't been drinking/eating much. I've been doing well through most of this, but this setback (even though it's hopefully very small) is discouraging. Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers!
BTW, we are in the hospital, so the Dr. has had her on Iv's since Saturday.
The source is unknown, but the camping in the rain is interesting as we were at the County Fair camping the week before and it rained a lot while there, but the interesting thing is there haven't been any other reports. The other possibilities include: animals at the fair, esp. goats and sheep that she was in close contact with, our 2 snakes that we recently caught that she holds regularly (snakes can carry E-Coli even in their saliva, though rare). We've talked to the Health Dept about all of the possibilities.

__________ Thu Sep 19, 2013 12:45 am __________

We had to get airlifted to Children's Hospital in Seattle tonight. She has the HUS, which is when the kidney's are affected and slow down. I'm so thankful that at the moment she is not in pain and is sleeping. We are waiting to meet w/the Renal Specialists and then hopefully we can get some rest.

Good thoughts and prayers for your dd and your family! It is so stressful when a child is sick and in the hospital.

I can just imagine how difficult it would be to pin point exactly where or who (which reptile or animal) she caught it from. Most kids are just so active and curious that it could be something that seems innocuous and hasn't even been thought of. A moments contact.

My dd spent part of last summer in the hospital after she contacted the swine flu (from a person) and her liver started shutting down. Very stressful.

Sending a hug (((((Amy))))) for you and your dd.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry you are going through this! Glad to hear things are improving! Sending thoughts and prayers!

I hope they have some positive news for you. I am sure they will do all they can to prevent any lasting damage.

Acccording to the Mayo Clinic website, the prognosis is good for young children:

Despite the severity of the condition, appropriate treatment leads to a full recovery for most people with hemolytic uremic syndrome — especially young children.

We are keeping you and your daughter in our thoughts and prayers. :group-hug2:

Today was a big day...glad it's about over.
She had the port put in and her 1st dialysis treatment.
Everything went well...now we just have to try and keep her comfortable at the port site in her neck.
She will get dialysis everyday until her kidney's can do the work themselves.
I'm told after about the third dialysis, she will start to act more normal.
