"IF" all of you have viewed the processing video I made last year, You'll
note at the end of the video I figured "dress-out" percentages. I believe,
it was at or near 54.?%. Which isn't bad....but not outstanding.

Raising market rabbits is about changing numbers in small increments in
your favor. It's not about "huge" profits with little to no effort. Quite the
contrary is the norm. It is endless work and continual diligence over the
smallest of things that make or break most rabbitry's. It's not the big-stuff,
it's the little stuff.

160+ days ago, I re-initiated my breeding program due to exemption clauses
that allowed me to process my stock under state approved guidelines shown
in the above mentioned video. I was quite pleased and truly humbled when
allowed to do this as it is unique and quite rare. I've adhered to and slightly
improved the methods shown.

87 head have been processed since I began.
Their total live weight was 478 pounds 14 ounces
Average live weight was 5 pounds 8 ounces.

Their total processed weight was 281 pounds 8 ounces
Average processed weight was 3 pounds 4 ounces.
The dress-out weight average was 58.8% overall.
That's up over 4% since I made that video.

I've hit 62+% one time with a 7-head litter. Again, these numbers
may seem "small" but a 4-8% increase in this category is "good".

My profit margin has increased slightly and will increase more....IF
I start processing rabbits the moment they reach 5 pounds. After that
weight is attained, it costs nearly double in pellet price to add any weight
to the carcass. A commercial producer must keep track of "not the dollars"
but "the pennies." Every little bit helps.

NOTE: in this hot weather, I'll process a 4-12 or 4-14 because they've
slowed in weight-gain due to the heat. As long as the finished weight
is close to 3 pounds, the restaurants don't seem to mind. My goal is to
produce and process 20 head per week for the restaurant trade, which
will produce a positive cash flow in excess of $250.00.

That's very interesting! I'm about to figure my cost per pound again, and it's naturally very different from your rabbitry. Still, I am working on some of the same things... faster growout, higher weight, less feed. An increase of 4% in dressout percentage might not make as large a difference for me, it's still progress in improving even my small backyard meat rabbitry.
