    Hello again!

Been offline for a spell. Our farm is growing: we are constructing a 4000 square foot barn for rabbits and brooding poultry. We are up to about 120 does and frankly headed for 400 next year... Lots a fryers!!! We are also incubating our own black copper maran and in the spring: geese...

usda regs and the pet market....

Lots of news about the impact of the fines leveled on a family... The pet market requires registration if sales exceed $500... this is totally separate from the meat market.

Cali pops 16---and the feed update.

Our Cali doe delivered 16 all alive today--our record for live births. OUr new custom feed is working as all the bred does delivered on time and with good litters. So gradual improvements are a welcome sight.

Doe with snuffles and litter--cull or wait?

I culled her and was amazed to see the physical characteristics of a lactating doe. The mammaries are quite extensive and milk leaked everywhere. It was a very interesting endeavor; I hated to put her down, but overall the decision was obvious...

Doe with snuffles and litter--cull or wait?

Eco---along the lines of my thoughts. Just wanted to run it up the flagpole both for readers input, helpful future advice and to confirm my initial thought.

    Odd doe behavior

I would suggest that your feed isn't as high in protein as the label implies. It is also likely lacking the full spectrum of vitamins/minerals. We supplement with dandilion, willow, oat grass, kale, raspberry, blackberry and grass. This has helped with condition, breeding and growth.

Doe with snuffles and litter--cull or wait?

I have a first time doe that developed snuffles last week. She was isolated and popped 8 three days ago. Five are left and I am wondering if its worth letting her finish the litter. I was not going to keep her and am concerned that the contamination risk isn't worth saving $60 worth of...

two first timers tonight--one to go...

I had a first time NZ tan give me four tonight; her stable mate popped 8, one Large doa and an aborted fetus. one looks weak, but the other five are fed and well. Lucky I was there as she didn't pull fur... I did. She made a nice nest about an hour prior then got to work. I will be...

    Doe behavior with PICS!

Put her in a cage with a box and hay; she may be close to parturition (delivery). I have had calm does get aggressive shortly before delivery too...

When to look at litter for "keepers"?

I look at growth in the kits and their frame---after I judge the doe. Doe criteria: litter sizes, milking ability, nesting/general care of litter, disposition. These matter prior to me selecting any of her litter.

    First time mothers

Does are not actually "fertile" all the time; however breeding will bring on ovulation and likely result in pregnancy. The vulva color does serve as an indicator of receptiveness to the buck---again, white/light pink does can be bred... Yes, all it takes is one intromission, however I like...

    Scrabbling doe---cull or fix?

I put the feeder up 6" so she cannot dig--she eats just fine! How do I make a creep feeder for the 11 kits? they are two weeks....
