For those who raise for meat - what breed ?

Yes. I would say 50 - 60% (if not more) of our kits meet target weight by 8 - 9 weeks. The lingerers are a week or 2 behind. We came about some good stock when we started and we are in the process of building pedigree since none of them came with papers. I don't know what else to say. I have...

For those who raise for meat - what breed ?

We raise NZW's because at the time we started they seemed to be the breed of choice for meat. We will continue breeding them since we have been quite happy with their production value. Even a couple of the smaller does who's mature weight is less than 9 lbs produce 5 lb rabbits at the 8-9 week...

    Kindling after morning chores.

I thought I would just post what I have noticed in regards to kindling times in our rabbitry. 2 hours ago one of our newest Moms kindled for her first time (her sister is due tomorrow), what I find perplexing is the time of day that all of our does have kindled. No matter what genetics or time...

Are these BOSS? and questions about feeding them

That is definitely sunflower seed (striped), not BOSS (black oil sunflower seed). BOSS is smaller than regular sunflower seed and pretty much all black.

    Perfering hay to pellets

I agree with Preitler. Besides getting warmer, my rabbits will regulate their rations depending on conditions. No fat bunnies here :D

    Where are my hummingbirds???

Well since yesterday we have had (most likely) the same female feeding intermittently. I find it odd too that given the milder winter and warm spring, the hummers arrived later; at least to our place since they were spotted 3 - 4 hours to the NW days earlier. On the other hand, we might have...

    Where are my hummingbirds???

I'm a bit frustrated that my hummingbirds haven't showed up yet even though according to the migration maps they have long passed our place :? The feeders have been up for 2 weeks now and we are diligent on changing "nectar" every 2-5 days depending on temperature. Anyone else here who puts...

    Reasoning behind your RT name?

I lived in Ireland in 2001 and first heard the word Knacker. It is a derogatory term used for "travelers". These are large groups of people who live a transient life in trailers, pay no taxes and often lie, cheat and steal to survive, and generally leave a heap of garbage in their wake. The...

Feeding Dog Raw Diet: Yes or no?

I should clarify my "dry white poops" statement. They weren't completely dry, but compared to those bloated and stinky poops that happen due to excess fillers I would say they were "dry". As well, they weren't completely white either but in comparison to regular kibble they were definitely...

Feeding Dog Raw Diet: Yes or no?

We fed a raw diet to our dog for the first 2 years (had her since 6 weeks old) and had no issues. The food was purchased frozen from a pet store chain which specialized in feeds which did not contain "fillers". Beef, chicken, fish, turkey, ect. mixed with vegetables, mainly carrots. We called it...

Hybrids Not Growing as Fast as Expected

What do you feed them? Do you feed them rations with a 15-16% protein content? Lower? What are your breeders weights? Do you know how fast your breeders gained weight when they were young? Did the doe provide sufficient milk in the first few days?

    Cardboard

Regular/standard brown cardboard is not an issue. I use it sometimes with my rabbits in my nest boxes and even toss it into my compost after it has been shredded. Cardboard with a glossy smooth finish is probably not advisable.

How much rabbit meat do you eat a week?

Frozen rabbit makes good presents, as well as good barter for other meats. We trade for lamb and chicken.

    Indoor barn and cage setup

As long as the main air stream is moving past the cages and not into, you should be good. A little direct air flow when the rabbits are dry won't affect them much. We use a 22 x 11 insulated lean-to shed for our barn and the west end hosts a 10" vent fan with intakes on the floor and east wall...
