In this post, you can probably tell I'm super green. :/
I got an American Sable doe, now named Anwen, roughly two days ago. She's preggers, so I've avoided doing too much. I checked her ears, eyes, nose, mouth, etc. at the scene and watched her. Her coat is shiny. Her feet are well-furred. Etc.
Unfortunately, the cage the breeder said I'd get with the rabbit? Handmade and useless. Too small for the breed, too small for a nestbox suitable for the breed. :x
I have two cages on the way from Bass Equipment, ordered on the 9th. They should be here tomorrow at the latest. Anwen was put in the large dog crate. It has a plastic pan, but the wire is too big for any potential kits, so I kept the pan in her feet space. She's been peeing like a fire hydrant. Newspaper and paper towels aren't cutting it, and she keeps lying on them. I put in about two layers of towels just now, hoping that'll work.
But I had to get her out of the dog crate, which was Hell on my hands and thighs (hello, scratches). It's very hard to get a medium-large rabbit out of a four foot or so dog crate. o.o Especially if you're used to handling Mini Rexes. (I have no idea what I was thinking either. I plead rabbit-related insanity. :| ) Apparently even though she is inside--in a basement with a dehumidifier and A/C going, sunny and neat--I found a maggot in her cage. Flies! I picked it up, smushed it, and put it in a bag. I checked her over for any wounds (hence scratching, though I thank my ping pong table for its sacrifice). Instead of flystrike (thank goodness), I found a damp, matted tail ( ) and some sort of zit on her ear.
I took some scissors to her tail and got off as many as the mats as I could. I'll need a helper to get the rest. Tomorrow hopefully. With gloves and long pants on. (It was unexpected.) I also wiped her vent and tail off thoroughly and cleaned her feet. I'm hoping the towels will absorb the urine better and keep her from getting damp until that cage comes in.
"Three to four business days." "She comes with a cage." :?
But what to do with the zit? I cleaned it up with soap and water. Should I put Neosporin on it tomorrow or try to open it up, as if it's just a human zit? How about tea tree oil? When my face was bad with teen acne, I used to use tea tree oil. It clears it up crazy fast. Should I attempt using it first? Can't hurt more than Neosporin, right?
Also, is there any way to convince a rabbit lying in rags covered in her own urine is a bad idea? :? I mean, it's a four foot dog crate. She pees in the back corner. -flails- There is sooo much more space! She was lying in the front when I left her, so maybe she's getting smarter...
-sighs and tries to relax- I have to sleep ASAP. Early doctor's appointment. But if anyone has some suggestions for what I must do tomorrow, please leave them below?
