We have Never in the years that we have had rabbits...Both previous and now, had a doe freak out when the nest box was put in the cage. NEVER !!!

Until this morning. Talk about a "Bunny Blender" !! She flung herself around the cage...screaming... tried to fling herself out the door ( that was blocked with the incoming box ) ... She ended up cramed into a corner under the feeder panting hysterically. I got the box in , closed the cage and walked away...( shaking a bit myself)

When i returned to finish puttiong in boxes for the other does , she seemed to be a bit calmer. I had DH hold the other does while i got those boxes in. That went Much better.

Of Course... this doe if the ONE that i'm so hoping has a nice litter ! She is very special to me. I'm concerned that the full blown panic might cause her to lose the litter.

Has anyone else had a doe freak out to this extent ??? Did they go on to have the litter alright ???

I'm looking for a little reassurance here.

Hana does that often and has litters fine. She's a bit nervous about the world in general and does the bunny blender on a weekly basis. Over her nest box right now. I used to have cages in the house with gaps such as not complete roofs or partially open fronts because it didn't matter if someone went wandering and no one wanted to. I had to make the cage solid because she'd fling herself out of any gap and go splat on the floor every week. She's got her second set of 4 kits plus a foster.

If I may make a suggestion for the next time, remove the rabbit from the cage, put the nest box in and then return the rabbit, along with a nice treat. I think it was likely the sight of this big box coming into her territory that set her off. If it's already there and not moving, she's more likely to react with curiosity than she is to freak out.

We just have Never had a doe flip out That badly ! The remaining nest boxes, we did take the doe out first. I felt So Badly for the doe to have been so frightened ! :bunnyhop:

I haven't ever seen one do that either. I think I'll make it part of my routine to remove the doe, weigh her, trim nails if necessary, and give her cage a quick cleaning before putting the nest box in and then return her to her cage. I usually trim nails about a week before, but doing it again wouldn't hurt.

I'm glad she is okay, and I hope to see pics of happy popples soon!
