When I was cleaning out the last rabbit, I spied squiggly pale things inside the guts. I suppose those are worms? I remember something about using ivermectin(sp?) to worm rabbits, but I don't know where to get it. Is it OK to worm pregnant or nursing does? Would it effect the meat? I'm just so clueless.. ^_^'
Thanks in advance. <3

I do... but apparently it is not always effective! I still add 1 cup DE to every 100lbs of feed- the trace minerals in it are good for the rabbits too.

I use my rabbit pellets, as part of my worm / black solder fly, compost / food. There is a reptile / fish / chicken food market, for black solder flies. Feeding DE to the rabbits, it could make the rabbit pellets, where the pellets could kill the black solder flies.?
- I am hoping to take a Master Gardener Course, and am interested from that view point, too. I am wondering how they handle the DE, as an inhalation hazard. Do you use a mask?
- Have you checked out, using pumpkin seeds, to worm?

yes , you use ivormec but use the pour on . Dont use on pregnant does . YOu can on nursing does. But please weight each rabbit so you dont over dose. It is very strong stuff. But it does it job very well.YOu can get it at any tsc or farm stores. Very easy to find.

Pumpkin seed...like from Halloween pumpkins?

Yup! You can buy them, (and I did) but they are pricey. You want raw seeds, not roasted, hull on or off. Sometimes they are sold as "Pepinos".

OK I just found this post in my search for the topic of worms. I have two youngsters, one I was planning to keep, one who I was letting fatten up more, at about 4 months now I think. They are both just getting skinnier. The rest of the rabbits in the colony pen setup, where we move about on pasture, look fine. The thinness has me suspecting they might have worms - odd its just 2 of them.
I see in this post that
- pumpkin seeds are somewhat effective
- DE is used - for internal worms? is this really effective - as treatment, not just prevention? (as in, a rabbit who might have it bad already) obviously a more safe alternative for any headed to FC than:
- Fenbendazole alfalfa pellets for horses - anyone used these? Gal at the feed store said someone with rabbits portions them out... anyone know how much for rabbit weight? And this may be more for pets than potential food

Anyone know if the worms that affect rabbits are the same as affect horses, deer, cats...?
