Will they ever pick a potty corner?

My new rex colony is a mess! Poo everywhere! And pee too! About the only place they dont pee is at the feeder but they do make plenty of pellets.

Is it a case of they just need to settle into the place or will they always just go at random? In their cages, before the freedom of the colony, they used the same corner every time so I wasnt expecting such a mess now.

Try putting hay in one corner for a while. They seem to like to pee in their hay. That is how I litter trained my sons bunny and it was so easy. :)

Ah, that might work! At the moment the entire cage is bedded in hay with a fresh layer added about every four days or so.

I use to use this cage for my growers so by the time the litter had built up and needed forking out onto the garden the rabbits were ready for FC and it all just got a good cleaning then but I had planned to put a nice big pan in the potty corner to keep it clean as a colony but without a potty, no potty tray would work.

I would put pine shavings over the entire floor and then put hay in just the corner you want them to use as a potty corner. I would even put their pellet dish over there for a day or so, until they get in the habit of going there. Then slowly move the pellets further and further away. Voila Potty corner established. :) Eventually you should even be able to stop using the hay in that corner.

Or at least thats what worked for me.

You are a star, you really are!

Got some good advise from tm_bunnyloft already regarding your colony. That's how I trained all my rabbits. Put hay in their litter boxes and set it in the corner of their crate. The boys went to whatever corner I placed it, but Luna, she decided she was going to pick the corner. Once she did, placed the litter box with hay in it and never had a problem afterwards.

Hoping it works and your rabbits pick their corner.

For some reason they do. I'm not sure why. I noticed it when I put tubs of hay in some of my cages. Thought it was a great way to prevent hay waste. Boy was I wrong when they peed and pood it all up over night. But I did learn how to litter train my bunnies. :)

My rabbits don't pee or poo on their hay. They eat it, the good little buns! ;)

Do they go anywhere else besides where you had the hay at TM? Mine decide they like 2 corners. One happens to be right next to their food which normally wouldn't bother me but since the kits waste half the food through the holes in the bottom I was going to put a board there to catch the food. Can't do that with them peeing there.

They are young and will poop else where some times but they never ever pee anywhere else. And they have moved up to a natural cat litter now. It was the easiest thing ever to potty train those bunnies. Now just if it would work for my son. :)

I used the method in this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Toilet-Training-L ... 0671693808

It takes longer to study the method than to potty train your kids. Plus, they learn how to do every part themselves- you don't have to go to the bathroom with them to help undress/dress or wipe them. It really does work, and aside from one or two accidents in the first couple of days (if any), they are completely potty trained after a few hours. My kids were all potty trained by the time they were about two and a half.

I potty trained my son by purchasing a couple of used potty chairs at Goodwill or yard sales, cleaned them up good with Clorox and provided one in every convenient area (his bedroom, the corner of the living room and even carried one in the trunk of the car for a while with a blanket to make a makeshift bathroom when needed!) The convenience and novelty of going in the different potties seemed to do the trick and he was very easily potty trained. I've since removed all but the one in his bedroom, which he gets up and uses by himself if he needs to in the night. He's 3 and a half now and has had very few accidents since he's been diaper free.

As for the bunnies (and your little man too)...good luck! I don't know anything about bunny training yet - I'm just reading every article in this forum to learn as much as I can! :)

lol, this thread kind of took a wonky turn from potty training rabbits to potty training children. Though some may think that rabbits peeing and pooping in hay makes them "not good" bunnies, I have to disagree. With all my rabbits, which are all inside, were trained to have the hay in their litter box. As they got older, I was able, from many cleanings, which corner of the litter box, (rabbits sure are creature of habits) was preferred. Then I was smart enough not to put hay there. They now don't poop or pee on their hay. With Luna my doe, she likes both corners. Typical girl, lol. Kits will be trained the same way. So much easier to litter train, plus does bring on the very important habit for good eating habits the joy of eating hay. Win/Win in my book. Nice clean crates, easy clean up, and lots of hay helping my rabbits digestive tenfold.

Yeah sorry about that. It was meant as a joke about my son, but you know how it is on RT. We love to help and so thats what we do. I didn't mean to get everyone sidetracked. :D
