This is the bunny that makes me want Otters. But is she blue or lilac?
Either way I love her.

She has tan undercoat. Is that normal? is it something that will be a problem in my future breeding?

That is a fault, but not something that can't be corrected. I see it often in mini rexes. Like uneven color in castors. I am not sure how hard it is to correct. Uneven color in castor is hard to correct, so instead of fighting with it I just bought another castor. At the time, she was the only castor I could find, so I got her, and finally came to realize that buying what I wanted was easier than trying to breed up. Unless of course the color is near impossible to find.

So yes and no.

Thanks for the info... I am considering getting a black self buck with the other half of my rex colony. Maybe that would help clean that up.

She has a really light tan underbelly but I dont know anything for sure so I figured I would post a pic and ask. She is sure pretty though.

Oh and she is out of a blue buck and a more tan doe like her.

She also has the light around the eyes, in the ears, and under the chin besides the belly, or so it looks to me.

__________ Tue Jul 31, 2012 12:26 am __________

I see what you mean by the Opal. That is cool. I love her color. Thanks for the help.

That looks like an opal to me.Why do you think it is an otter?

I thought that too and was hoping you would come and have a look, but I didn't want to say it because if the breeder said it was an otter, perhaps it was just a otter with a bad undercoat? I've seen some off lilac otters in MR.

Before I hit the pillow last night, I should have asked the question I usually ask---is there a tan triangle on the back of her neck? And if you blow into the fur, do you see rings? Agoutis like your castor have the same markings as otters, except the agouti fur is ringed, and the otter has a tan triangle on the back of it's neck.

Either way, the coat color is uneven.

That answers it.... She is an opal. Thank you so much for the explanation. There is no triangle! I knew I was missing something.

Well now I know what to keep my Castor for. And back to shopping for my Otters. :(

I thought otter because she came from a blue buck and a blue tan doe. Supposedly!!!!

I have a ped where an opal came from a tort and a broken tort--that should be genetically impossible, since torts are aa-selfs. Can't get an agouti from a self.

I'd sure like an opal, been trying to breed one for 7 mos now. The only ones in my herd with the right genes are broken, and I lost the broken doe, just got a broken opal buck now, waiting to breed him to the blue doe.

I am getting her Mom and a litter mate to her Dad next week. Oh and her litter mate sister. She is a mini but you are welcome to one of her kits if I get another opal. :) I'm more than happy to share.

__________ Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:09 pm __________

Really black and chocolate would be a good place to start at least as long as one of them was otter.

A mini opal would compliment my mini castor buck. After my mishap with my black doe Wonder last week, I almost wanted to give up the minis, but I here i am planning again :)

I just spent some time on a site reading about color and the Rex standard.
I am really learning a lot being here. By the time I get my standard Rex herd going I will be more than ready for them.
