Is there a best time to put nest boxes in with the doe? We have a doe due to kindle on 2/7. This will be her second litter. The first didn't make it, so I'm wondering if we should bring her into the basement where it's warmer, or should we leave her outside? We have a tarp over the cages, and plenty of straw, but we're supposed to have a cold snap in the next few days. :?

Did they not make it because they were born on the wire?

If the first litter wasn't born on the wire, and you bring them in, it would me more for your benefit than theirs (checking on them etc.), as long as they are out of the wind etc. as you stated.

I can't really comment on bringing her in. We have a much more mild climate and all of my rabbits kindle outdoors.

As for the nestbox, most people put them in on day 28. That gives them time to build the nest and is there in case they're early. So, I would give it to her on the 5th.

yeah... I guess another good question is "How cold is a cold snap in Ohio..." We are supposed to be in single digits tomorrow.

In view of that, I put the nestbox in at what should have been day 26 and both does expecting on the 5th acted completely out of character and began nesting immediately... one MUCH more elaborately than anything she has done before.
