Can anyone tell from this picture what is wrong with her nose? It is read and swollen and slightly "scabby" on the top. She is not sneezing, has no discharge, is eating fine, and is her normal self. I looked for sharp edges in her cage thinking maybe she scratched it on something but I couldn't find anything.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Is vent disease something that once treated it goes away or does it continue to come back? Just wondering since this is a rabbit we might want to breed in the future?

treat her, treat anyone she could have come in contact with.
Once treated, if treated properly.. goes away, does not come back.

How close can the contact be? Each of our rabbits have their own cages, but we have put our rabbits in a playground outside. It is a split playground so the only contact would have been noses through the fence. Also, we do handle our rabbits quite a bit. Could we have passed it to other rabbits that way? We don't have any other rabbits exhibiting the symptoms.

people are somewhat divided on that particular issue.

Some say direct contact only (as in noses and what not) others say that they can catch it from contact with surfaces from infected rabbit to non-infected.

My thought pattern is to err on the side of highly contagious and to treat anyone she could have touched noses with and any buck that could have been with her or anyone who has run on the same ground that she has. The rest is up to you as to who you treat.

Thank you for all the information!

I have one more question - today she looks like she has split her nose in half and has some goopy stuff around her eye. She still seems to be eating okay.

Any other thoughts or is this all normal for vent disease?

Can you post an updated picture? That would help...

Wish I could help. I hope your doe will recover, and that your other rabbits remain unaffected. This thread is very helpful for me, since I am new to rabbits, and have much to learn about their unique health concerns.

Her nose looks really raw in the pic- perhaps it got really dry and "chapped"? Have you tried putting any ointment on it to keep it moist? As for her eye, I think vent disease can affect any mucous membranes, so possibly it has spread to her eye.

This is an updated picture. I'm not sure if you can see the split in her nose and the goo in her left eye (your right in the picture) - she wasn't being real cooperative. :(
