Talking to a breeder via e-mail... what would you pick out of these 3 options? Myself and my husband are having a hard time deciding what would be our best option....

A proven brood blue sr doe

A unproven blue sr doe

A blue otter jr doe with show potential

Here are their pictures... In the order listed above...

What is the price difference between them? They all look like they are related to each other..they all have the same butt and almost the same headset.. they are also a little over- posed. Their hind feet are pushed too far forward.. I would ask for more pics with the hind legs lined up properly and maybe some more "natural" pics. How old is the proven doe and how much does she weight?

Why is the other SR doe not proven?
by waiting until they are SRs for the first breeding, you may run into a fused pelvis.

Devon's Mom Lauren, I don't know weights or ages, except that the jr was approx 4mths. And do not know what the price difference is between them yet. I will see if she can get some more pictures, that is a good idea.

Tailwagging, I didn't think you should breed until they were sr(6mth), I knew before a year, but I didn't think before 6 months was good for them....

MaggieJ, I am looking for both. I am looking for showing. A nice show doe, or a doe that produces nice kits for showing... But I am still learning what quality looks like, and can't tell as easily as some people.

I go by Raising Rabbit the Modern Way
Page 69
under mating your rabbits
"for small breeds, your does and bucks should be a least five months of age. the medium breeds should be 6 months and giants must be at least eight months of age. For my tans, a small breed, I always say five months or 5 pounds"

That mean that they kindle as SR but bred as JR. for the med and giants are bred as intermediates and may kindle as such or as SR.

i would think a bigger consideration would be what colors you're trying to get out of mating your rabbits together... how does blue fit into your program? i dont remember your other colors and genders of rabbits

Blues are exactly what we want... any variation of them. A little less partial to brokens, but love the solids, silver martens, and otters...
My colors I want to work on most is chocolates and blues but since Stuart died, I am not sure if I am going to continue working the chocolate line or not. I might just focus on blues....

I just want to make sure what I am getting is good quality.

BTW, Prices are 60 for SR Proven Doe, 55 for JR... For some reason my 'vibe' says not to go with the other SR.
She will also breed the SR for 10 dollars more....

ooooo but I love your chocolates!

who doesn't love a chocolate bunny??!!

how old is the SR?

First I would look for a doe that meets the standard.. that would include weight, I asked because you called the first doe "brood" She may be over weight and unshowable. If the sellers are calling her brood then she is most likely not showable because of size. Now sometimes you can get an awesome brood doe for breeding but she would have to have that kick-a** type going on for that. The other consideration for her is why is she that size? It could be she is a larger "true" dwarf which you don't want, however it could be simply because she didn't get a dwarf gene. These types are fine to use for breeding as long as you know there will be a higher percentage of false dwarfs! She is a nice-typed rabbit for the price and you would be able to produce your own kits fairly fast if you get her bred also. What you won't have right away is something to show.. the little jr. shows promise in her picture although I think it was taken when she was a lot younger than the 4 months that she is now. She may be going into or even cumming out of the uglies and would be prime for showing as an older jr. The self colours and otter/martin go together quite nicely. Crossing into the orange will get you agoutis.

Not sure yet on the age of the SR doe, waiting for a response... I also asked for more pictures. I am not necessarily in a hurry to show something, I just want to end up with something that will be a good show bunny at some point! LOL Be it now or later, I really would just like to have some good stock and show rabbits....

I love the chocolates too.... It will depend on what I find available...

The senior doe has the best type.the junior doe isnt posed right.I would get the senior doe.If her bucks really nice get her bred.TYPE is everything with Netherlands.

The sr doe waighs 2.11.... I am really leaning towards her. It was a debate between the proven sr and the jr but I am really thinking the sr is my best option right now....

__________ Thu May 26, 2011 10:42 am __________

We went with the SR and are going to have her bred prior to getting her here.. We are almost exactly 1 month away!! Seems like a long time!
