Was at the local pet store today to pick up a mouse for my snake, and they had a little mutt rabbit that was the weirdest color!!

The whole body looked like a silver tipped steel, but all the points were pure black. I didn't think that was all that odd, until I saw the RED EYES! WTH? It looked like a himi that the contrast got turned the wrong way on!

Mom is a sable, dad wasn't around.

I'm the first to admit I'm no genetic expert, I've only been learning about it since the middle of this year, but how is that possible? All of the kits siblings were himis.

I'm trying to downsize, but I'm half tempted to go back tomorrow to see if I can buy it just to post a pic to prove it exists!

I'd love to know what to call that color and learn what the genetic code is for that one!

how old was it? Sables are born dark then lighten up, it could have been halfway between a colour change.

Yeah sometimes a sable, when they are young, have a weird steel look to them until they molt. I also saw a sable with not a red hue but a full REW eye be ingshown by a youth for Mini Lops. Should of dinged it but nobody else but myself and my mentor noticed.

Sables can have a red ting to the eyes. If the baby is 4 weeks its color could still change. Plus my chestnut agouti woolies have the dark chestnut color on the tips and a light grey everywhere else besides the head, until the molt then it is light chestnut through and through.

Oh, no, this was no red tinge. This was full on REW eyes. And they had a kit that looked like this before, also before I got into genetics.

I might just have to buy the devil bunny to get a pic for everyone...

The red eyes is odd.

Only REW and Himilayan 'should' have red eyes. Is it possible it is a very chilled himilayan kit that hasn't grown out the soot yet and will eventually only have darker points.

Another possibility is the Lutino gene but that is VERY rare in North America (and pretty rare in Europe as well). I do know of a brother and sister who cropped up in a ND litter with pink eyes and likely had this gene but I don't know if it was followed up on.

Hmmm, if its that rare then I really have to buy it!!! :p

Oh hey! Think I found my answer!!

Thanks DOOD, you answered my question back in January. Must be a chocolate lutino as the kit does look like a champagne. I'll do some pic research and post one here if I find one that matches!<br /><br />__________ Tue Sep 24, 2013 6:48 am __________<br /><br />Hmm, no pic matches. Darn. This buying it thing is starting to become an irresistible possibility...

Ooh!

If you think it is this gene then you MUST get this kit and his mom and track down the father and any siblings !

Having Lutino become more popular in North America would be AWESOME

Pictures of some lutino's - http://www.rabbitcolors.info/int/en/entries/p/1.html

I think the tan Lutino is very unique and would love to see what a silver marten Lutino looks like :D

Hubby said no unless I get rid of 6 (his randomly generated number that he thinks I'd refuse) rabbits. Little does he know... I have a momma rex and her five kits that are for sale or up for freezer camp. :p

Not to mention the nine JW's that are for sale!

If you're interested in lutino's, you can join our page on facebook :)
There are breeders from different countries, europe, UK, US :)
There is also a lop breeder from the US who has a tort lutino lop that unknowingly popped out, her name is Gina.. maybe you know her :)

I doubt if he's a lutino..
You said he looks silver tipped steel with red eyes? That's not possible with lutino, they can never be black.
A geneticlly black lutino is born lilac colored and becomes lighter as he matures.. yellow/buttery.
A chocolate lutino (champagne) is a warmer honey color.

A chin lutino would be almost white with light (lilac) ticking. A sable and himalayan lutino becomes white like rew.

Here are some lutino's of mine and others from my colleagues's.

My doe Videl, she is genetically black, they don't get darker than this.
The champagne lutino on the website posted with images is the brother of Videl.

Notice the difference in color of Videl in these photos

Here she a 4 month junior

And here she is 7 months, molting to a lighter color

Nova the buck. He is also black based.

You could just take a picture of it.

ACK! I can't believe I just said that! I must be possessed by an anti-enabler!

It's about four weeks old.

Four weeks? That is a bit young to take away from mom and siblings... :hmm:

...so why bother "tracking down any siblings" when he has them right there? You'll just have to pick one of his doe littermates to ensure his survival.

And thereby increase your chances of "replicating" the little devil in a future litter.

(Whew! I feel more like myself already!)

Are... are you... seriously gonna make me hide in a corner and cry? And I thought YOU were the nice, fathomable one. :(

Well, when it comes down to it PSF, it is only reasonable to get him. 4 weeks old?? You know how young that baby is? He's just going to die lonely in some ignorant person's hands if you don't get him. It's just the way it is. You have to do it, he's calling you. Do you really have such a soul to let him go to someone else's property... other than YOUR'S? That's just.. unacceptable. Especially for someone with a place to... keep him. You... you shall also, send me into a corner, balling my eyes out over you two's behavior. JUST... YUCK. :|

Wow, gurl, that's low.

Take a picture or buy it! I require to see a blackish red-eyed rabbit. Heck, I have the biggest need for weird genetic anomalies, so I'm sure plenty of other rabbit peeps in your neighborhood would love to buy up any odd babies the little man might father. :D

Ugh, I took a closer look just now and I was wrong after all

Sorry guys, got myself super excited too. It was an odd color (silver tipped steel-ish) with black points, but on closer inspection (I asked to play with it today) it's eyes were just a very creepy shade of brown, almost red, but not REW red like I thought.

So bummed. I like genetic oddballs...

I know, I know! :wall: Next time I feel "possessed" I'll  until I feel more like myself again.

Ah, sounds like a Siamese sable then, maybe a silvered Siamese sable. -shrugs- I figured it had to be that, because my main girl, Anwen, has ruby eyes like something out of The Secret of NIMH. Gorgeous rabbits. Keep the rex for the fur and the American Sable for their coloration, including those ruby eyes. :D

Still would be a fun addition, right? :p
