Sigh.

Star was bred to Dobby. She had 7 babies, I wasn't pleased with the colours, but was hoping to maybe get something worth keeping. Well, they're worth keeping, all right... Keeping in the freezer after idjit stomped them to death.

She was jumping in and out of the nest box, and every time she jumped in, I heard a baby scream. She had 4 dead between when she kindled(around 10pm) and when I checked them(around 1am). The next morning, the other 3 were dead. So I bred her to Snow(happy coincidence, because if she took, her litter is due around my dead dog's birthday), and am now starting to plan on what to do with her when she kindles her next litter.

I am not sure why she's doing this. The woman I bought her from said she had no issues getting her to kindle and raise a litter. I wonder if she's still not used to the change in venue(went from being in a bunny barn with limited human interaction, to me being around quite a bit), if the dog bothers her, or if she just hates me and wants to ruin my day. But, so far, my plan of action has been to move her to another less frequented room of the house, so she's more private. I can't decidde if I want to just give her a nest box and do with it as she will, or if I should be pulling the babies and just putting them in for feeding times.

If this next litter doesn't go well, I will breed her one last time at the same time as another doe, and then hope they kindle on or around the same time, and switch the litters. I will probably do Crystal, because her babies with Snow will have horrible pinched hips, and I don't really want to be breeding/selling them, so it doesn't matter if Star smooshes them all.

After that, though... I don't know what to do with Star. She's oversized, so I don't particularly want her here, and with her issues raising babies, I don't want to pass her off to the next poor sucker to find out what I found out. Should I offer her for sale and let everyone know that she's had issues raising litters for me?

__________ Sun Mar 10, 2013 1:26 pm __________

Anyone have any suggestions of what to do with a pet breed doe who's passed her chances?

I think it depends on what you are comfortable with. Even "pet" breed rabbits can go to freezer camp. However if you are uncomfortable with that, you could try to place her in a pet home with full disclosure as to why she's no longer a brood doe. :)

Well, she is almost 5lbs... LOL.

I couldn't do it. I could give her to someone else to do it, but I couldn't do it myself. If I'm going to do meat rabbits, I need to know from the very first moment I lay eyes on them that they will eventually be on my dinner table.

We have had a couple "nervous" does. In desperation... i gave one a cardboard box... Completely closed up...with only a hole for her to go in and out of the nesting area. She raised that litter just fine. Guess she wanted the bunnies secluded. Since then i will try the closed box way as a Last Resort for a doe that i Really want bunnies from.

Just an idea...maybe one of those nesting "tunnels"? The longer ones where she would jump in and have to hop to get to the babies?

I don't know, but I do feel for your frustration.

with the nervous nellies....give them a much bigger than they need nestbox and stuff the kits into a tiny pocket in the back. The nervous nellies have room to be in the box. The kits have a safe hole in the back and all goes well. They stop being nervous within two days (normally).

I think I'm going to give her a large rubbermaid tub, upside down and a hole cut in it. She probably wouldn't do any more damage to it than she does her plastic litter box, I hope. I'm going to give it to her now, though, along with a litter box, because she likes being enclosed and confined. I might actually do it for Crystal too, because I have a few totes without lids.
