this baby kit was born May 30.

it was NOT like this yesterday. As I check the kits twice a day. Granted, last night it was dark and all I did was check for all warm bodies.

the rest of the litter is healthy.

I have two small ones in the litter but they are doing well.

Breed: holland lop.

The big dome shaped head and small ears are what peanuts look like, if its not a oeanut then im not sure what could be wrong with it.

to be further descriptive.

the kit was found lying upside down sleeping with litter mates.
it is not squirmy, when held it will crawl for a moment, and then stop and lay in a flat position.
when held in a hand it lies flat, as opposed to curling into a ball like wee kits are apt to do.
up until this morning it acted and looked like a normal kit.
it's head is swollen.
it didn't eat this morning as it's tummy is hollow whereas the others are well fed.

what causes this type of change in a kit?

Mom might of stepped on its head and injured it. I am sorry you are going to loose this one.

That's my first thought, too. It's unfortunate but not uncommon.

I think it's either injured, or developed hydrocephaly. Either way, it probably won't last long. Poor little bun. :(
I was thinking the same thing.

Miss M uses words i dont know, now she uses one i cant even say (hydrocephaly)? Maybe she will come back and explain what that is so some of us dont have to look it up, im too lazy today to look it up.

hydro - water
cephalic - to do with the head

hydroencephaly means fluid building up on the brain.

It could be edema (fluid build up in the tissues, toasted! ;) ) caused by an injury. Remember when our kitten got whacked in the head by our gate in high winds? That is what his head looked like. It eventually abscessed and I drained it and he was fine, so there may be hope yet!

Hydrocephalus is when excess fluid builds up on the brain, causing the head to enlarge. It is typically seen in very young children.

OAF- ya beat me to it! LOL!

Basically, the 'drain' between the brain and the spinal column is not working-- so the cerebral-spinal fluid builds up, expanding the skull and compressing the brain. In Utero, rapid growth processes handle a lot of the excess, but once born, the slower growth rate not there to help the kits head/brain. Chances are, the kits head was just a tad larger at birth, but the slower neonatal growth rate has accelerated the process of skull enlargement.

Wow, everyones smarter than me, thats good, hopefully i will remember part of what i read here.,,,THANKYOU EVERYONE
I'm sorry, Toastedoat!

Please remember: using big words does NOT equal smart! Nor does it mean smarter than you! Some of the "smartest" people I know of have also been the most callous and cruel, having the big-headed idea that they're better than everybody else. Many of them also completely lack common sense in addition to common courtesy.

On the other hand, it's been the so-called "simple" folks that I've known who seem to know the most about the stuff that really matters. They also tend to have a clear concept of what is going on in matters of government and domestic and foreign affairs, and are less inclined to be fooled. These are the people I consider to really be the smart ones.

My use of some of these larger words comes from my family's involvement in the medical field, and also from my father's fondness of learning new and unusual words. (Which he would then pull out on me, so I had to learn them out of self-defense!)

You put that better than I was going to Miss M. I was just going to say we are all nerds!
